Hiya! My OH and I want to start making a base/village building game in Unity. Whilst he is great with coding , I am going to be doing the visual parts. I like the idea of using the Toon generation figures for my Npcs etc but I would also like to "make them my own" within Blender or ZBrush, does anyone have any good recommendations for matching scenery and building models? Also , any good tutorials for using them within Unity?
I need plant models, medieval buildings etc and animals also.
I can do seamless textures already but not sure where to start on actually making Daz models work within a game etc.Thank you for reading!
June 4, 2018 at 1:44 PM #629051Well, not really what you're asking, but if you're gonna be using the DAZ models for anything "live" with mesh included (like controllable 3D-characters in a Unity game), you need the interactive license for each asset you're using - that means every asset you're using the mesh from, which would pretty much be everything in a 3D game. That gets expensive very quickly. This is of course if you're worried about "legal". If not, no worries (apart from people cracking down on your game with no licenses).
June 4, 2018 at 1:57 PM #629062If your making a game to post here for free then no problems. If you want sell it then you need deep pockets and/or a lawyer.
My first suggestion if you dont want to model eveeything is get other people on board. A small team might be gathered if you hit MOD forums. Ive seen ridiculously good mods posted free. Second would be freebie sights and ask for permission and/or help. This help will be on their time schedule and most will finish their work but expect some to BS you.
June 4, 2018 at 7:05 PM #629316Thank you, yeah I thought I would try the models mentioned from here and see if they are any good for what I want. If so, then I'll be buying them and the licences. I also would like to get a feel for how to put one together myself from scratch
June 4, 2018 at 7:08 PM #629320Thank you, I am grateful to be able to try out the stuff here to see what works well. It's pretty expensive to buy a load of stuff that may never get looked at or implemented. But definitely will be purchasing the Unity Licences along with any asset licences that we put in to a finished game. I'm hoping we can do a lot of it ourselves. I'm a 2d artist mainly and have always wanted to try 3dmodels. I'll see how it goes. It's for a fun project first but who knows?
June 4, 2018 at 7:08 PM #629321oops double post
June 5, 2018 at 12:20 AM #629522It's a pity your not making a game in UE4. https://80.lv/articles/epic-gives-access-to-12-million-worth-of-paragon-assets/
June 5, 2018 at 12:49 AM #629542Wait, so should we start sharing our UNITY purchases too?
June 5, 2018 at 2:02 AM #629601are these usable in Daz and how do you download them?
June 5, 2018 at 2:41 AM #629624@d0gg0d, I would doubt it would be easy but you can download them from the unreal store/marketplace https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/free. I don't know what format they are in or how they are rigged but I would guess they are full models and not figures dressed up like Daz, Poser and the like. Aaaaand I just noticed this on the page "Licensed for use only with UE4 based products".
It was just something I read recently and thought pertinent.
June 5, 2018 at 3:46 AM #629660I logged in and "brought" most of the free stuff but the Download links wont open when clicked. Possibly a setting on my system. Probably wouldn't work for me anyway. FBX files explode and OBJ files wont pull in texture maps.
This would be nice to make a game but wont others think the same and post 3 different games with all the same content? If model modifications are allowed it would be a good starting point.
June 5, 2018 at 7:31 AM #629826Evil Monkey - Thanks , I'll check it out. Maybe I can make texture maps for the OBJ files if they aren't compatible with Unity
June 7, 2018 at 12:43 AM #631849@shinangel, I only noticed at the end but they're “Licensed for use only with UE4 based products”, so don't bother putting in the work for a Unity game as you won't have the legal right.
June 7, 2018 at 7:43 AM #632209OK, thank you x I have decided to learn Sketch up so I can make most of the buildings with that eventually. Also, the Unity store has some pretty decent free assets. I think I'll stick with that to simplify things
