So I got a character. She's got various morphs. Her fingernails are deformed when I give them any kind of length. I can't get rid of it. I got rid of every XTransfer morph because that was the source of the screwy-ness for a previous character. However, it persisted with one character. Nothing, no morphs, that I zeroed, removed from the figure, or uninstalled entirely would fix it. No wearables that I deleted would fix it.

Then I saved the shape as a shaping preset. Loaded onto a blank figure, and boom. Everything worked as it should. No deformities when I added fingernail length morphs.

Why does this happen? The second version of my character had the exact same shaping morphs, etc. It had the exact same skin, hair, etc. What do I need to reset to fix the problem with the original figure so that it works the way it should?

It's just a matter of adjusting the rigging.

Edit > Figure > Rigging > Adjust Rigging To Shape.

A panel will pop up with all of the figure's bones. It looks intimidating. Just click Accept. DS will cogitate for a few seconds. It will fix the issue. It's a "Ribbon Fingers" issue (look it up). In time, when you get more confident, you can isolate the bones that require rigging adjustment and adjust them specifically. But it honestly won't harm anything to do them all at once.

There's a means of saving the rigging permanently after you've adjusted it, but I don't remember the process off of the top of my head. I've found that simply saving the adjusted figure as a scene subset does the job.

Figured it out. The problem is much simpler. It was the smoothing modifier. The new figure didn't have a smoothing modifier. The old one did.

There were only 2 smoothing iterations on the original, so it basically wasn't really doing anything. Didn't notice until I saw the fingernails popping back to normal length after I bumped them to 100%. As soon as I removed the smoothing modifier, all of the deformities were gone.

So there you have it. Part of the problem is any Xtransfer morph. Another dude had a problem with them. They're bad morphs. They affect one side of the body when you dial them up. One dude identified it as a problem, and I had limited success after uninstalling them.

But the major culprit was putting a smoothing modifier on a character. I did it accidentally trying to put it on some clothing but had the figure selected. As soon as I removed it, boom! Problem solved.

So that's my contribution to the Daz body of knowledge: If your character's fingernails look like wtf, check for a smoothing modifier on the character and remove it if it's there.

I know what you're talking about re: the rigging adjusting. It fixes it so the fingers aren't weird and the width of gummy worms. Saw a tutorial of it before I posted the question.

I'm glad you got it figured out. I jumped to conclusions when I saw the reference to 'XTransfer' and screwy 'deformations', which was the source of my own 'ribbon finger' issues. I'll add your fix to my tool box of solutions.

But don't rule out XTransfer morphing entirely. It can be a pretty valuable utility. But it's only as capable as the person using it.
