I have been playing "Clair Obscur - Expedition 33" so I DL some of their G9 characters into Daz. They all seem wrong until I realize the problem is the expressions and Daz just sucked, or that I sucked, so the characters just look wrong. This is the first time I got the impression that games, not separately rendered cut scenes, are now superior to Daz.
How is Daz can't generate better static expressions than a game character in real time? Are the tools used by game studios that hard to implement into Daz?
Edit: I am not asking for help to do expressions. I just want to know why Daz can't make doing expressions easier. Is G9 worse than what UE5 is using?
May 25, 2026 at 9:07 AM #2175767Hi,
Can you post some pics so that we can see your problem.
Wish I can help you 🙂May 25, 2026 at 9:20 AM #2175772Thanks but I am not asking for help. I am used to hitting Daz limitations but I've always thought Daz assets are superior to what games use but apparently not anymore.

May 26, 2026 at 12:57 AM #2175815I think you’re failing to consider some crucial points.
A console game can rely on a specific game console environment. It has to be able to work within the specific X-Box or Playstation system. It’s solely devoted to running those particular games in that particular environment. Daz3D and vendors don’t have that benefit. Products could be on 'this' system or 'that' system with any number of different CPUs, video cards, etc.
Console games like the one you mentioned have millions of dollars poured into them to produce outstanding results. Gaming has a substantially larger fan base and therefore a substantially larger income. Daz3D does not. Hell, DS is free. Their income comes from selling the content and the memberships. Which isn’t as lucrative in comparison.
Game characters can have rigging that can produce significantly more realistic expressions. Genesis characters don’t have anywhere near that level of rigging. You certainly could employ more rigging in your Genesis figures. But there's obviously a limit, because DS will likely move like a drunken slug. If it doesn’t immediately crash, of course.
Why? Because DS isn't designed for it. Which means you'd have to redesign DS to support it. Which in turn requires a lot of money. And a reliance on anyone who wants to use DS to have substantially more powerful systems.
And that’s just off the top of my head.
Please correct me where I'm wrong. Sincerely.
May 26, 2026 at 7:27 AM #2175843There are a few points that I think you should know.
Firstly, most of the ports are of low quality, likes seriously the porter just did not give a shit and did a bare-bone job at most. There are only a few peoples who consistently make high quality stuffs really.
Secondly even if they did a good job, when they ported the model to daz, it just looks off. Because they ported the model at the base sub-division (not their fault, Daz forbids the use of HD morph for non-Daz's artists) and when you apply sub-division to your character (which is on by default) the face warped/shrunk a little. Not too much of a different, but just enough to feels off.
Third, daz's expression system is built for the base g8.1/g9 face, so when you apply them on different models they just dont look right. This is likes your smile looks brilliant on your face with those dimples and all but the same smile looks ugly on my face cause I look like a troll, lol. This is why most artists make their own expressions for their own characters. You can try and sculpt the expression yourself but that is a lot of works.
Honestly in my experience, the base expression for the eyebrows, eyes blink, eyes movements are good enough. Its the mouth part and the moving of the jaw thats problematic. There are some good 3rd party products that you can use to help with it some what.
I like the face control morphs pack, and Bluejaunte's characters smile morphs are all very good and natural.May 26, 2026 at 2:36 PM #2175869And you use morphs done by an external artist, some expressions used in Daz studio are clearly done for some model and mess a bit with others models.
Did you try those expressions without the Clair Obscur morph injected ? =)May 26, 2026 at 6:51 PM #2175876It all has to do with weight painting, and which bones in the facial rig affect each other. There's also the fact that expressions were motion-captured, rather than being dialed in manually bone by bone.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bgr_UPOXctQ you can see here that the face rig used in the game doesn't have too much more complexity than Daz models, although they are obviously a little simplified for consumers compared to the rigs used by professionals.
The fun thing is, there is nothing keeping someone from redoing all the weight painting within Daz itself. There's just no reason that anyone with the skill level required would do so.
