I still have my old laptop around, just in case I need it (I used it to play w/ running DS under Linux, but I can't seem to get the RTX 2070 on it to do GPU rendering, so I quietly sat it aside for now.)

Disagree fully. There is a vast difference between the two: One involves moving assets and parts of assets while visually bringing a scene together, while the other involves typing a bunch of words, maybe tossing in some pictures, and then hoping for the best. |
Also, I've noticed something... if you ever thought that CG art is too homogenized and visually overdone, AI is IMHO 10x worse. It's almost all the same themes, same/similar characters, same etc. Of course, this has kind of been a constant in art since global communications became constant in the last century, so that's not an AI fault - it merely amplifies it.

I'll also throw my hat behind @pooper's. I'm a staunch fan of 'playing with dolls' in Studio. I'll load an interior, fiddle with furniture or toys, drop one of my girls in and spend an enjoyable time dressing her up. Often, another lady or two will get in on the fun. Then there's posing. I can easily spend a highly enjoyable evening 'playing'. I'll take screenshots along the way and set it to render when my mom tells me it's time for bed ("Awww..Mom...I'm not finished yet!").
@pooper's got it nailed regarding AI. I keep seeing the same few ladies in every venue, from Pinterest to DA to Instagram to....Hello. Not that it bothers me, but I think the conversation has sidetracked a bit. Focusing on the subject of the video, I think this is a bit like Amazon; people -including me a few times- use it to buy almost anything, driving a lot of competition, small and big, out of business. We all have contributed, in a smaller or greater degree, to the creation of an almost monopolistic monster and the more time it passes, the more we are at its mercy.
With AI is the same: the more we use it, the more we encourage these insane funding rounds and resource hogging. Theoretically, we could stop this process by not demanding its services, but that requires some kind of collective foresight that is getting harder and harder to achieve in our increasingly individualized society. So, yes, the future is rather bleak in the short term and really terrifying in the long one.

I dabbled with ComfyUI, but the more I use it the more I dislike the entire process and where we are headed with this monster. I'll use it to upscale older video and pictures and stop my adventure there.
I'm seriously thinking of going back to Blender and really getting stuck in to some tutorials that'll help me create instead of me gazing with an open mouth of what others have achieved. As for hardware becoming so expensive, I would suggest buying older HP and Dell DDR4 machines if you want PC / Workstations that are still worthy and built to last.
There's gonna be a HUGE crash or reckoning...there always is, and prices will plummet.
And/or China and the EU will get their own factories online and prices will plummet.Yep China is already ramping up production of DDR4 chips massively, and DDR5, but yields are still low on those.
Sadly VRAM production is not so close, although there are rumors CXMT have a working process.
There's still some hope for the PC bottom feeders like me. 🙂
Actually I built a new PC last year before most of the price hikes, but still on a 3060 graphics card. Maybe next year....
