One aspect of what I teach is creating a figure from real life people. What makes this popular is that we use celebrities from the news etc.
We use a few pipelines and software.
Daz,Face Gen, face transfer, Zbrush, Keyshot,Photoshop.
    We do not use Headshop!!!!
A technique is taught how to create reference images with digital camera (even an Ipad)
Also, in the news, Mug shots are used
Everything depends on the reference images used:sculpting, texture, etc.
Recently a student started submitting work that was truly
amazing (really amazing, considering his abilities)
Since you really can't cheat doing this I had to find out how he was doing it.
Turns out on RENDERHUB there is an artist who sells modelheads.
And in the description he gives you all the views (textured) of the heads.
The student did screen shots of the figures and used
them in Face Gen and Face Tranfer (slight modifications in Zbrush)
(there is a Miley Cyrus by this artist in the request section)
I was tempted to sign up with the student!!!

    Hope this helps

Apologies, I was just casually reminded we also use Maya
on occasion (when animation may be needed)
There is a Daz To Maya Bridge!!!!!

Hopefully the results you teach are better than most of the Celebrity Series items here.

It should be noted that a figure created (sculpted, textured)
is in great demand in studios and games.
One big avenue, years ago, was in the Pre-viz area

Years ago, a popular female vocalist had gone through a
    long rehab.
She was contracted for a music video.
The producers were scared that she would go back on drugs
    before the shoot.
So various people were contacted to create a digital figure.
Without her knowing it, a digital double was used in a
    mock up.
Fortunately, she stayed clean and the shoot went off.
But, not to waste money, parts of the digital were used.
The NDA 's for this are still in effect

@fuzzy3000 in fairness, the Celebreity Series line are notably terrible. I wouldn't be that hard...

The Celebrity Series serve a purpose.
    a. If you can't model, they provide you something (fantasy people)
    b. If you can model, they provide a large jump off and time saver
    for applications such as Zbrush.
Some of 3duk items serve the same purposes.
If we are talking games/images all are adequate.
When you get to film digital doubles we are talking something else!!!

Finally if you consider where we are having this discussion, most are
    probably free anyway.

Yeah I was never a huge fan of Jolie, she did some interesting stuff in her early career but always felt kinda "meh".

    There are always new 'celebrities'.

What I would rather see are likenesses of golden era film stars in their prime, when you had genuine celebrities, not just effectively mass media influencers jockeying for attention.

Also if you look back further to the silent era, there were some true beauties there too.
Long forgotten stars, but genuine celebrities of their time.

    🙂

In the golden age of the studio system aspiring young actors and
present ones were sent to a studio photographer who lighted them
and posed them for publicity shots.
They also posed current stars in stills from their latest work.
One of the most famous was George Hurrell.
A few books were published with his work.
I have them all, they ain't cheap.
If interested check Amazon or Strand.for used
They provide a guide, of sorts, for posing and lighting.
    All applicable to Daz.
There will be a test on this on Monday,
For extra credit who did Cecil Beaton photograph?
