Just opened activity tab, and some smartass made a bunch of new "members" within 1/2 minutes. All "strange" names. I got An idea who it is but can't prove so I will not speak my thoughts. But I think It is a pathetic way to do things. I hope the mods can at least remove the welcome points.
What a sad life one must have to take pleasure out of this kind of behaviour...I think I saw 15 new members in the space of 30 minutes. Maybe issuing welcome points need to be looked at @warrant63.
So it's not just me then. I've been watching the membership totals and we've gained almost 1K members over the past few days. I agree that we HAVE to stop giving away points so easily, especially to those who contribute nothing. Perhaps it's time to gain points ONLY by posting or buying them.
I think the welcome points should be reduced to fifty. That would certainly act as a disincentive to people such as those.
This is one of those situations where you lower the speed limit and it causes more accidents.
You didn't think people wouldn't find an exploit did you?
if you want to give points away at creation you need some sort of kink that makes it so difficult to exploit only a few hard core people will bother

Maybe the only legit thing would be ONLY offering points for uploading and re-uploading assets. That or winning an art contest.
It would discourage folks from opening multiple accounts, and incentivize participation (both adding assets and artwork/contests).
At least, give it a shot for a couple of months, and see how it does.
Honesty, there are enough members here already, and its the same small percentage of folks that upload new assets anyway. We don't need to give ourselves a self inflicted wound by opening the flood gates to folks that will just abuse the system.
@redflag Or maybe have a probationary period; where new members who have yet to contribute antything, don't automatically receive full welcome points - say fifty out of the five hundred during this period of time - but must demonstrate that they're here in good faith - be it by contirbuting to the forum and art showcase, intracting with other members and uploading at least one asset to the blog. Then, along with their points for contribution, they receive the remainder of welcome points.
It's just a thought.....
If these fake accounts are all made at high speed, it's doubtful that the scoundrel making them will switch IP adresses between each request, even if they have a VPN at hand. There might be something to use there. Making an account should be rendered slower, more intricate, maybe with a series of captcha hoops to jump through, so that creating multiple accounts becomes infuriating when done manually and very hard to implement as an automated procedure. I could see something like a series of randomly generated questions, for which one would need to look up the answer for example. It could be picking the 10th number in the 31th row in a table, and that table could be changed periodically. Just musing here... but I think the way to go is to make the farmers feel like this:

Or buying them. That always has to be an option. It offsets the costs to run the site and, in the end, contribute more to keeping this site up than winning an art contest.

How about new accounts get the 500 points but instead of instantly getting them they are distributed over a time period. Say 100 each 7 days from the join date. So it will take 35 days to get all your free points.
Good idea Adam but there's currently no automated process to do that and I'm sure no admin would like to do it manually. If they do write a new plugin/script to do that and it crashes the site we'll know who to blame 🙂 .
well..... They can turn points on and off globally as well as the amount so.... Perhaps they can figure it out. Wouldn't be the first time Ive cause an problem.
