    I was just wondering....
There are many, many characters for Genesis 8 and 9 female. Females are the majority of characters being shared.
What makes you want a certain character?
Is it the body, the face or the skin?

I myself tend to look at faces and skins. Bodyshapes can be made with morphs, and if you got a few, you can make any shape you like. And most of the shapes in sold characters are alike, barbie ++.
Great if you wanna make erotic stuff, but less so if you want to go for a more realistic look.
    ( But that's my opinion)

    what's your's?

I kinda agree, if it's a good looking skin (not even necessarily realistic just a nice overall style) it enhances the character a lot. I also tend to dislike extremely frail characters that you can tell were made that way just so the bending wouldn't get f**ked up and it ends up with this very weird skeletal look around the arms/shoulders/armpits.

I also like if the shape is somewhat continuous, if it's a bumpier character with more deformities around the waist/hips (like big hip dips or over pronounced ribs and such) I am forced to really mess with morphs instead of just being able to add the details I want to add on my own, which is to say I appreciate the artists that give you the possibility of adding sculpted details separately or maybe some morphs for different part of the body they included in the package.

I also appreciate the longer taller figures, a thing G8/3 did better than G9. You have those short legged stocky characters on 9, and I liked the older ones better. Elongated features / taller characters look better imo.

Shape of the cranium is also something I appreciate, some characters straight up look like Yakub xd Shape of the eyes are also something I appreciate, the detail of it. Some artists really give the eyes depth and they look better in close ups.

I think about the face of a character and how it appears when an expression is applied. Next, I think about skin texture to denote ageing. I'd go for attention to the eyes to start a base for make up. As you said, the body can be morphed to suit so I wouldn't buy a character just based on body shape, it's usually the face/head shape and make up options I'd choose.
    Very good question!

Unique, distinctive faces, mostly cute ladies. I find that so many look the same and use less than a dozen characters. Because of the clothes I still mostly use good old Vicky Fourpointtwoplusplus with a few G3 and G8. Vicky is hard to beat because of her massive collection of expressions and poses.

I like Ethiopia's comment regarding Vicky Fourpointtwoplusplus, I like to use the figure because it's easy to find items of interest for, it works in Poser. All of the files that go with the figure can be edited quickly, I can't edit Daz format files easily.

You Use Poser, or import them to DS?

This would take a while to explain.I used Poser since the first version. I wanted to buy a new computer, I also wanted to find the best programs at this time and have a major update on what I was doing. This is a hobby I like during the winter. I searched for images on websites and asked how they were produced, I got a lot of help and advice. My main goal was Daz studio. I came on here to look for items I could test in it and get an idea what software is available. When I began using Daz, I could link to the Poser libraries I'd built and experimented using files between them. I liked the renders that Daz produced but I thought the work flow was too slow compared to Poser. So I did use all the items I created in Poser in Daz, but I kept going back to Poser to create items. I'm back using an old version of Poser, but that's for another complicated reason.

Basically, I am a fan of ultra-realism, and I like variety.
Obviously some will appeal more than others, but different morphs, ethnicities, skin tones.
For instance, few merchants can really nail an East Asian face.
When that is done well it will grab my attention.
It isn't a problem, because I can adjust to my liking with Measure Metrics, but I prefer characters with a more real world height as opposed to the overly tall characters.

I just checked, apparently the average female height in the UK is 5' 3"

I collaborate with other artists. For one I make poses for his comic book creations and some props too. Recently I started to work with a fan of ultra-realism, but instead of using Daz or Poser he uses AI. A posed figure from Poser produces the first image. This is converted to line style. He then uploads it into a AI program which creates the background and then it puts skin tones and cloth textures onto the figure shapes I made. So far it works well, I'm still learning.

@zaba, that's my goal too. I'd like to have AI do the grunt work of rendering since it does fabrics sooooo much better. Any renderer chokes with fancy fabrics like Satin and organza. There's some new fashion fabrics (shimmer acetates) that are not only possessed of a unique sheen, they come in various degrees of translucency. Any renderer will throw ups it's hands in defeat while AI (once it's trained) would eat it for breakfast and return a gorgeous render.

Usually, it's realistic looking features combined with good textures.

I'm not a fan of the toon look, or characters that look like Bratz dolls. And, I wish there were more male characters.

To Charley, I found Godin makes the best characters. If you wanted a lot more info, there is an artist on Deviantart called sturkworks. He has an account on Renderosity too. He makes a lot of M4 textures.
To Ethiopia, I agree with the AI making better cloth textures. I have a friend on Deviantart that is a young model. She used her own photographs in an AI program to produce new images that were wearing the same clothes but retextured as PVC or leathers, these are a bit risque so I will leave the link out.
This is starting to turn into an ad for AI and deviantart, sorry.

A characterful face and/or really realistic looking skin for the most part.

A realistic and natural looking body shape - particularly if well detailed is a huge plus, but that's easier for me to achieve myself than a face of skin...
