I read TorrentFreaks every day to not only stay on top of what's happening with the protocol, but to watch developments in the piracy scene in general. This article caught my eye...
Bitmagnet Allows People to Run Their Own Decentralized Torrent Indexer Locally
While some folks have talked about torrenting dying, it's far from it. A new indexer that runs on your own computer is just one way that torrents are evolving to meet the threat. This is the sort of thing that we (collectively) should watch. File sharing sites have proven to be fickle and easily taken down. Bunkkr and Mega could disappear today leaving us in the lurch.February 20, 2024 at 4:17 AM #2059454Completely agree and thanks for the link. Now that i'm finishing up my move I can check this out and see about hosting the stuff i already have to keep it going as they disappear from legit trackers/trackers get taken down.
February 20, 2024 at 10:21 AM #2059483Torrents may be a good option, BUT the main problem is to find some incentive way to push people to continue seeding. Torrent sites generally rely on the ratio uploads/downloads, but this does not seem appropriate here, otherwise people will be encouraged to keep, say, large 10G hdri packs instead of small 1M scripts.
To make torrents useful, one must think of the best way to reward seeders with points. Maybe count the number of active seeds per week(day?) and give points in such a way that very active seeders (with several hundreds of shared files) can, for instance, double their automatic daily logging points.
Anyway it will be complex to implement and probably even much more complex to tweak in a useful and fair way.February 20, 2024 at 11:14 AM #2059489@hamster, The other problem I see with the linked system is that I believe it's totally anonymous with no way to track the trackers. It's strength is also it's weakness for us.
I just had a thought, we could contribute to a seedbox. That way, only contributors would get the link. Everything could be password protected.
Another thought. The good old usenet is still quite active. A lot of content there is password protected. It's the ultimate protocol for anonymity. There's even a Poser group.
February 20, 2024 at 12:17 PM #2059496@ethiopia .. i would totally subscribe to the seedbox idea.. but i don't see many people going for that.. and then again, as a contributor to a seedbox, some might not need all the content shared through it (say, they need only Daz assets and have no need for the others Unreal, CC. Blender) which would also be there.. some might feel that they are not getting the ROI.. 🙂
February 20, 2024 at 5:21 PM #2059563That's why I like the idea of the usenet, it offloads the storage to an essentially free to use venue. You do have to pay for a provider but prices are reasonable.
