If I hit "reply" to a post does it automatically send a notification to that person? I thought I was getting erroneous notifications but if this is the case it explains it.

I just hit 'Reply' to test it out. 🙂

If you hit reply on this thread I won't know if it's notifying me for that or because it's a new comment on the thread 😛.
I'll hit reply on your post and you can tell me if you get a notification.

@frank22 Yup, if someone adds a reply to a thread, the thread starter gets a notification about it.

    X

+ of course if someone @ tags your name (tho this doesn't work if you add the @ tag during an edit, or when the thread is already closed)

    🙂

Thanks for that warrant. You say, "if someone adds a reply to a thread the thread starter gets a notification" and I get that, but how about hitting reply on a post in a thread that's not yours? ie. the reply button on the top of every post. That was my question.
I just did it for your post so let me know if you got a notification, note I didn't tag your name.

Oh sorry 😀 Yeah, the "normal" reply gives you a notification too 🙂

Ah ha.... that explains why I sometimes get notifications from threads that aren't mine and ones where I haven't been tagged. Mystery solved.

I've never even noticed the "reply" option before. After reading this thread I had to look around for it. I've always just added a new comment to the thread at the bottom of the page. I guess it handles things differently, i'll have to try to remember to start using it.
