So I have gotten a bee in my bonnet about finally putting together a comic, web or otherwise, and an upcoming Superhero RPG I'm going to be participating in has served as the primary inspiration for said comic.

It's a street level Hero, set in the 90s in a fictional Seattle.

The main character is Salvo, a character with powers similar to Gambit or Rexplode(from Invincible)

    Salvo Poses

The entire comic will be rendered in this flat, stark Monochromatic (Caused by having a single light in the scenes that is turned off, creating dark blacks anywhere there isn't an emmissive shader applied)

    Color Style Test

working on Environment rendering ideas and style currently, will update with progress.

    What's everyone think?

Looks good to me Tensen. So everything that isn't black is emissive? Please keep us up to date with your progress. I'd love to see how this turns out.

First pic gives me a bit of that frank miller vibe.
The second pic is def reminding me of RWBY.
Two gun users? What about the rest of the 'gang'?

I learned a neat trick a couple months ago.

To make a silhouette of any 3d object; add a geometry shell to it, then add emission (pure white) + make these changes:

    luminance = 1 + luminance units = watts + luminous efficacy = -1

Yeah, everything that isn't black is using Marshians emissive shaders, that come with Reflective Radiance, with the reflections turned off. Everything else is just whatever color, it doesn't matter. The main thing is the single distance light that's turned off in the scene tab. that's what creates the black silhouettes.

This also means you need almost no textures other than the masks to create tattoos and eyebrows, making them images render almost instantly.

I hadn't even thought about Frank, though I guess you're right yeah. may have been unconscious. Never seen any RWBY though. It's not a gang, other than the first character it's literally just random characters created to show of the style. Though who knows, they may turn into actual characters.

Yeah I'm getting the effect just by adding a distant light and then turning it off in the scenes. Anything that isn't emissive just turns black.

This is rad! How are render times with these effects applied?

Each of those characters rendered in like maybe 10 seconds max. And my computer isn't even that great.

The key is that there's only like two, maybe three textures MAX on a character, and none of them have to be that large, so they are only like 200kb each. So they are basically completely untextured characters with some emissive shaders applied, and that's it. It's a surprisingly easy effect to get.
