Hello everyone,
being relatively new to the 3d world, i have started playing with v4 and dawn a couple of years back together with the g2/g3/g8 models. Much to my surprise i noticed that some unique characters for v4 and dawn are very pretty and there are still some artists creating characters for them in 2022.So my question is: is there a way to use the morphs and skins of v4/dawn into the g3/g8 figure?
I am sorry if this is a newbie question but there are a few chars that i'd love to be able to somehow port and use with g3 or g8. I haven't joined the g9 wagon and won't for months to come, so i am not interested in that for now.
I'd love to use some of my characters into the newer generations and hope it is possible
November 4, 2022 at 3:27 pm #1885935That has been a sore point for many years.
RSA over at Daz said that he would do a character converter V4-V8, but never did!

November 4, 2022 at 3:39 pm #1885938I've tried converting a few of the V4 to G3 or G8 and they never look the same as they do in V4 form. You can get close. But its never quite the same.
You can follow the link below tutorial to do V4 to G3 or V4 to G8 or any generation to any generation. I realize its G8 to G9 but its the same process.
If you're like me and need to read through. Look at the second link.
The third link might be a little more difficult but its will return much better results. He's a good guy to watch for how to do stuff.
You might be able to do a V4 to G2 Texture. Then a G2 to G3, and G3 fits G8 but I can't imagine its going to look the same. I tried with the Daz version of Angelina Jolie. Didn't work quite the way I had hoped.November 4, 2022 at 3:48 pm #1885942Yes, the problem is the morph degrades with every conversion iteration.
That is why I was so disappointed by RSA's lack of response on the V4-V8 direct character conversion script.
It was, 'Yes, I know people want it, I will do it.' & then never did!
I suspect there was pressure from Daz to drop the idea as V4 was by far their most successful base character at the time.

November 4, 2022 at 3:51 pm #1885944Yeah I was just looking through some V4 stuff to help another member here and suddenly I find myself converting some clothing lol.
November 4, 2022 at 4:00 pm #1885946Thanks for all the answers, and how about Dawn? Has anyone ever tried or is it just a variation on a V4 base model ?
November 4, 2022 at 4:06 pm #1885949Dawn is just a V4 variant. All of the above will work on her too.
You basically need to just be able to create an OBJ. And Dawn works in Daz as well. So you can do that. I don't know V4 stuff very well as the way they did things back then confused the crap out of me.
Some stuff is in Figures, Some stuff in Poses but they aren't poses they are the actual item. Then stuff in Props that should be in figures.. Then some materials are under lights. I gave up.
I spent more time trying to figure out where everything was, than I was just enjoying the product. I just gave up.
Sounds like a me problem. LOL.November 4, 2022 at 4:07 pm #1885950It is a quite attractive standalone by Hivewire, & it did attract a pretty loyal following.
That said it never really made it to mainstream.
I believe a lot of V4 stuff is fairly compatible with some fiddling about.November 4, 2022 at 4:18 pm #1885956@DirkDiggler, I hear ya and having started playing with daz so little ago i actually installed all my v4 figures as if they were newer generations, moving all the content in the right place.
I created folders in library in a very organized way so that the actual morphs and all the materials are in one single folder, of the character itself. Whenever they had content under pose / materials / lights / props but were relevant to the character, i would move everything into the same folder and it works. I just sometime find double materials (for poser and daz) and keep them both just in case. This way I load V4, apply a morph, apply materials like skin and eyes and she is ready to go. Same with clothes, I realize is much easier to have everything in one folder rather than use the original (and for me stupid) organization of things. The idea of applying the morphs to a newer generation should have been a priority, some V4/Dawn characters are really sweet. I'll see if i can do it with the tutorials 🙂
November 4, 2022 at 4:24 pm #1885960I tried doing V4.2 GND but she just does NOT look the same when converted to G8. I haven't tried the RS3D Wraps version but I just don't have the time to play with converting something that "Might" Work.
I figured it was easier to just make one from scratch or use the SimTenero Randomizer 2 to make a new character.November 4, 2022 at 5:23 pm #1885979November 4, 2022 at 5:44 pm #1885986@eelgoo yes I am of your philosophy, I basically installed since the very beginning all my assets by hand and my library is impeccable, all sorted and love to see I am in good company on that as i had immediately noticed so many errors made by PA on their folders management.
One thing that was absolutely nonsense for me was to see that that many times artists creating textures add-ons would simply place their work in a random directory of theirs and not even on the folder of the original product that the add on is made for!
Excellent guide you provide!
November 4, 2022 at 5:47 pm #1885988Thanks. I tried my best with it.
As I inferred in that thread.
Vendor's cannot be relied upon to be consistent how they structure their product folders.

November 4, 2022 at 6:56 pm #1886014V4 is possible. Takes a bit of elbow grease to get right like Dirk said. I've had pretty good success using R3DS Wrap to replicate characters on newer generations. May I ask which characters in specific you are wanting to convert?
November 5, 2022 at 10:58 am #1886263@Recktat19 that program seems to be amazing, but i see it is very expensive to get a license and it's not even perpetual. I am not sure i'd make a good use of something like that for something trivial like converting a dawn char to g8. But more importantly, would the amazing textures she comes with work on the g8 conversion? i am not so expert in that sense either and have never tried to apply a V4/Dawn texture to a g8 character.
Regarding which character, there are different that i'd like to convert, but i would maybe send you a dm to discuss this further if you want to help.
