HI all. I am an amateur (this word should really be emphasised!) DAZ user who loves making renders for my own reference in story writing but am struggling with interior renders. The image included here was a four hour IRAY render on a simple laptop. I've used a 3 point light setup and there are emissive lights above the characters (in actual light locations).

As you can see, the render is very grainy but my outdoor renders don't seem to suffer with this generally.
Is there a simple reason for this?
The only ones I can think of are:
Low spec laptop (12gb ram but everything else is pants)
Amateur light placement/settings
Useless user
Any help at all?
Thank you 🙂
October 18, 2022 at 8:06 AM #1878477In outdoors scenes, a lot of light is free to just not interact with anything and, when it reaches a certain distance from the camera, it's ignored.
Indoors, light bounces a lot between objects and so your computer calculates all those interactions and it cannot "escape" from the camera, resulting in even more calculations. If you also have reflective surfaces, that would make the perfect nightmare (try to render a closed bathroom...)
The quick and dirty solution is to disable a wall so that light can "escape" from the scene.
Other things you can do is:
1) Render at a lower resolution
2) Disable caustics (they are off by default)
3) Hide things that are not visible in the final render.Other than that, you could use an AI denoiser such as Topaz DeNoise AI

October 18, 2022 at 8:09 AM #1878479That's a pretty good render if it wasn't so grainy.
1. Your graphics card? probably can't fit the scene (all the textures) into its VRAM so your CPU has to do all the work = very slow.
2. Your sys ram is too small, not that it helps much in light of the above. 32MB is considered the minimum these days.
3. Emissive lights are slow to render. Ghost Lights are much faster.
4. I'm sorry to say that your laptop isn't up to quicker rendering. You need a better system and GPU (NVIDIA) and unfortunately that will of course cost you money.
5. You could possibly optimise you scene by reducing the texture sizes and changing the lighting but if you don't have a dedicated GPU I doubt that would help much..... sorry.October 18, 2022 at 9:07 AM #1878485@Frank21 That was pretty much what I feared 🙁 I was just a little confused that exterior renders aren't all that bad but the low spec on the laptop was kinda what I feared. Don't think Santa can help much either this year, but as I said these were never gonna be award winning renders anyway.
All your comments are appreciated guys. I'll have to go sell my body for medical research LOL
October 18, 2022 at 9:16 AM #1878488You can also think about using an Artificial Intelligence!
October 18, 2022 at 9:22 AM #1878493That's the business @Ehrez. Bookmarked that site, might come in handy, thanks.
October 18, 2022 at 10:47 AM #1878508@Ehrez Bloody hell mate!! You may have just saved Christmas for me!! Thank you 🙂
October 18, 2022 at 3:14 PM #1878560@frank22, @unusualsuspex
I'm glad it helped! 🙂October 18, 2022 at 4:46 PM #1878592Delete walls not in the scene.
Add more light and dim it down in post.
This is probably the best way that I've never tried
IMHO don't use daz denoiser. It really softens the image to much.
October 18, 2022 at 6:02 PM #1878616@D0gg0d Thanks ADAM. Tried dropping all the walls in that scene but it didn't help sadly. As I said, the pics are just visual references for me while I'm writing, but I find it strangely therapeutic... until this kinda crap happens!!! LOL!
October 19, 2022 at 3:29 AM #1878734Ok, I've always been one to ask what I thought so...
Why go to the work of designing a scene to write about when there are hundreds of westerns and at least 10 excellent ones that are well filmed with excellent visuals? I can understand setting up a town to reference locations and maybe even the way they dress but I'd guess they have a few changes of clothing. Seems like a bit of extra work that could be summed up in a few words.
I don't write books so I've no experiences to compare to. At most I've written a short story for school or a RPG adventure.
October 19, 2022 at 7:03 AM #1878777It's a good question though. For me, writing starts with a good idea and is pretty freeform after that. I'll have a destination for the story to reach, but the route there is pretty malleable. As I mentioned before, I find the whole DAZ thing therapeutic but while it gives me some images to hang my words on as far as the character is concerned, (visually fitting a face to a voice to words) it can also trigger small scenes.
As you can see, apart from the two characters the scene is pretty empty. So what started off as a bit of therapy for M.E. became the basis for a scene in the story. The words for that scene evolve from me seeing the interaction in the image.
Jeez, I didn't mean to give a half hour lecture but it's one of those fuzzy things that is simple in my mind, but when it comes to describing it... Meh LOL!
October 20, 2022 at 1:55 AM #1879179Honestly, invest in a proper PC. You could build a second hand rig out of eBay PC parts for £800 that'd render a scene like that in 3 minutes. If you buy old but efficient compents.
It's not pocket money but if you love the hobby put a little aside and reserch what you'll need it'll be worth it I promise. Besides I bet you're saving a bundle on here.
My PC is getting on a bit now but the idea of a four hour render on low settings with only three lights, wow. I admire your dedication. Yeah, you can fix it in post but imagine the creative output if you could smash out renders at a whim?
As an aside it's fascinating to hear how you use daz. Inspiring stuff. Personally I make little animated scenes by mixing up anti-blocks made with mocaps. They are terrible but I get to play at being a film director in the most pro active sence.
October 20, 2022 at 7:34 AM #1879261@Ruinedclaw Cheers mate. You're right of course and that would be the ideal solution. Unfortunately, due to illness I can't work any more and the benefits I receive just don't allow that kind of spend or save, especially in today's economic madness.
My personal use of DAZ doesn't require the kind of perfection that a more powerful PC would give me, so it's not essential, but I do really enjoy some of the better renders that come out of it as well as the whole process being (for me at least) a great kind of therapy.
To you and all the other guys who have been so kind as to respond, thanks so much and hey, if an unknown distant relative leaves me a chunk of money in their will.... LOL!!
