First, thank you Monk for sharing the AJC Japan’s Modern High School Uniform For Genesis 8 Males. I went to DL it but bloody hell... more than 1000 MB! 4K textures being the culprit.
It's a great set but I had to give it a miss. I wish PAs would stop thinking that their stuff is better simply because they use enormous texture maps for clothing.... they aren't and it's an entirely unnecessary pain in the arse. Rant finished.October 1, 2022 at 11:32 PM #1873113A few creators seem to take the time to fine tune & optimise their product.
Most either aren't skilled enough or don't bother.🙁
October 1, 2022 at 11:44 PM #1873118I don't mind downloading a few gigs for HDRIs because that's necessary for them to work as intended, but with clothing there's no real need for 4K maps. In fact I usually reduce the 4K maps by 50% when I use them. I can also understand 4K diffuse, SSS and normals for skins as people want to do portraits, but for clothes.... get real.
October 2, 2022 at 2:28 AM #1873150I really love the bag, but when you look at the clothing the material set-up is all wrong. Since when does a cloth jacket need such a high glossy layer weight and specularity that makes it look like leather rather than real cloth?, and the folds are all overblown, as are the bump/normals making the seams jump out stupidly.
As you suggest LP, it would take me 10-15 minutes to correct all the "mistakes" made by the PA before I could even use the clothes in a render.October 2, 2022 at 6:11 AM #1873171Out of curiosity, I downloaded "this monster".
I don't see a problem with the textures, which are 500 +/- Mb...
The duf and dsf are uncompressed.
In a "normal" installation, the size on disk is 4813172 bytes. After passing my "minifier" and compressing them, they are 1639907 bytes.... More than 3GB!!!
And the textures, with 80% compression, are from 500Mb to 278Mb.
After all the process, 1408554 bytes.
Still, it's outrageous for a simple suit! LOLOctober 2, 2022 at 10:18 AM #1873200I have to admit, at first (and to my untrained eye) I was excited by all clothing and hair, but with time I started to realize that many vendors just create...rubbish. (Sixus1 being the worst of the worst when it comes to textures, although he/she sometimes does better work, but the earlier products were cringe).
This is...clothing? Just no....

Now, for the clothing in question...it's very good! Just look at the level of detial:

There is absolutely no comparison. Will I take the 3 gb hit for it, yes. Just make sure you get rid of all the other garbage clothing, it might help 🙂
And, as other suggest, compress the textures if you have HDD problems...or buy a bigger HDD (I am using 12 TB ones...so 🙂
October 4, 2022 at 3:57 AM #1873771A *lot* of the PA's are just lazy, or don't know any better. I run all jpg files through JPEGMini, cuts the file size down with zero noticeable degradation. And the ridiculous and unnecessary amount of png and tiff files I generally convert to jpg. I can't tell if PAs just think file size = quality, or if they genuinely just can't be arsed to do better.
October 4, 2022 at 10:02 AM #1873857Business is money. Daz doesn't give a damn about the product to be sold, as does Renderosity and others, about quality and "good work."
-"Does it work well? Let's sell it!"-; That is company policy.
No quality control is necessary. If it sells, it's good! 😀October 4, 2022 at 10:41 PM #1874052@Frank21
You say: "Since when does a cloth jacket need such a high glossy layer weight and specularity that makes it look like leather rather than real cloth?"
Try change the top coat color on the surface tab. Maybe will help.
October 5, 2022 at 1:21 AM #1874082Yeh I can easily fix that in the surface nodes, like I have to do with so much clothing.
I get the feeling that some PAs see a whole bunch of nodes and think they have to use every bloody one of them. The level of luster of natural fibers like with a cotton t-shirt or jacket is very low. It doesn't need pumped up metallicity, reflectivity or glossy layer weight.
It actually gets more ridiculous...... a pair of normal running shoes with emissive surfaces...WTF?
October 5, 2022 at 3:30 AM #1874098That's true LP. The thing that gets me is that the diffuse value is set really dark so it makes more sense to lighten that up and forget the emissive, as I had to do. Emissive geometry also slows down renders so I can't see any point in using it unnecessarily. Poor skills, thoughtless conversion or couldn't be bothered... probably all three.
October 8, 2022 at 3:10 AM #1875076Nobody is forcing you to download this content. Perspective is key. Use common sense. Buy more HDD space or buy an A100 gpu. Sure you can afford this since you are complaining about trivial things on a site dedicated to piracy.
October 8, 2022 at 3:48 AM #1875082@Cc592 welcome to Zonegfx. Point taken but as I stated earlier I'm not complaining about sharing the product and I have plenty of spare SSD space, I'm bitch'n about the general trend by some vendors to make unnecessary 4K maps for everything, as opposed to ones like Stonemason who knows how to optimise their products. If you can explain why the pair of socks in this product actually needs six 4K maps (bump, roughness, base color, metallic, opacity, and normal) I'd like to hear why.
October 20, 2022 at 12:50 AM #1879166Just when you thought it couldn't get any more ridiculous.
Diva's Desire Outfit for Genesis 9 -Face count:
Boots:2,331,204
Bracelet: 156,238
Dress: 394,279
Earrings: 57,666
Necklace: 724,843
Cap, 219,338
Ring:29,629The ring alone has more polys than a G8 figure, nearly double, and of course the outfit comes with no less than 63 8k textures = 4.2 Gb (installed) for a simple outfit.... all completely stupid and unnecessary.
October 21, 2022 at 4:29 PM #1879936I wish the creators would put the high res textures as separate and optional files. This will allow the user to decide what they want without having to go the @littlepleasures route and manually resize it themselves.
