There seems to be a significant recent trend towards selling character morphs without textures.
I am not against it per se, because it offers a softer start for new vendors who are just starting out & getting to grips with things.
Just recently however, I have noticed established vendors getting in on the act.
That I don't like so much.
I can't exactly put my finger on why just at the moment though.
Any other views?:0/
April 17, 2022 at 11:21 PM #1797199Yep, products without the texture peeves me. Its worse when they don't even mention that the texture isn't included or what texture they used. Vendors from renderhub seems to be the worse when it comes to this.
April 18, 2022 at 12:21 AM #1797211Rednerhubb is awash in morph-only characters now. To be fair, some are top notch, but generally they are the lazy route to content production.
I don't know if it's a case of not being willing to shell out for merchant resources or create mats from scratch, or if it's the next big scam - "skin sold separately".April 18, 2022 at 1:09 AM #1797217Thanks for the replies.
I'm pleased it isn't just me that is concerned about this new trend.

It really bugs me as well, some are not even that special, just an average morph. Actually the whole new bundle system with selling an outfit in 10 different parts, turns me off from buying anything. Pure greed.
April 18, 2022 at 9:45 AM #1797282Whilst the nickel & diming has appeared at Daz, the morph only thing ( other than Z3D morph & pose packs which have been around some time ) hasn't cropped up there yet.
Only a matter of time I think.
🙁
April 18, 2022 at 7:48 PM #1797479I have no issue with this, so long as the vendor doesn't start charging for the lone morph as if it is a full on character pack. If that starts becoming the norm, I'll just reopen shop and start flooding the markets with my morphs, lol. Morphs are easy...texturing will always make or break a model. And I am loath to rely too heavily on resource packs for textures.
April 18, 2022 at 8:53 PM #1797495Not much different than creating a character morph and applying the same texture as 10 other characters they have with a mole moved from the left cheek to the right cheek. Some characters are so close to other characters that if you have one of the artists characters you have 80% of whatever they are selling.
If they take it into Zbrush or blender and create an actual unique character and not just a dialed one, then the morph is worth it if priced reasonably.
Most cases I rarely use a full morph. Ill dial 3 or more characters into one and apply a skin from someone else. I treat most every character as a kitbash resource.
April 18, 2022 at 9:51 PM #1797504It's not just you, brother. A texture is IMO at least half the character. A shape is just a shape. A texture is just a texture.
Proof of this: If I were to create a shape that perfectly represented Adolf Hitler in 1936, but gave it a skin texture from, say, a shift foreman at the Chittagong ship-wrecking yards last Tuesday? You'd never in 1,000 years recognize the figure. Ever. I could bet money on it.

This is true, but the same could be said for the shape as well. I can recognize something made by SASE without ever seeing the name - if you remove the skin and made them all the same shade of gray, you'd have maybe three character variations from that vendor. They're far from being alone, though. It is exceedingly rare to find someone that can do a wide variety of shapes and skins.
I kitbash the heck out of my characters as well, mostly because I want that custom shape and texture combo.
April 18, 2022 at 10:17 PM #1797508Krashwerk as well. Probably several others. Still I'd rather see a custom morph than a dialed one. When people list a character as custom it should be more than a few dialed settings.
Turnoff for me is skins with special designs. They add a design with 10 different color settings all over a skin and try to push it off as something special. Just a load of texture crap to fill up a drive.
Biggest hang-up is characters that morph everything but the hands and feet. Some will morph a character to almost teen proportions and leave the hands and feet at 100%.
Would be nice to just click a race, skin and body type then dial anything like some of the new programs coming out. Daz should just move to clothing and character dial add-ons like aliens for example.

Definitely can agree to that. Unless we're talking about something like a build-an-alien kit... if it has tats or funky designs on it? Pass.
April 18, 2022 at 11:19 PM #1797532The textures, in my opinion, is more than half the character, it's about 7.5/10 of a character even. My best looking character look like a troll in different textures D:
