I'd rather keep politics out of this place. But I keep reminding myself how long it would take me to get from my chair to the cellar should the nukes start flying.

The EU said it would support Ukraine
If Europe and Russia go toe to toe then Ive got a feeling China will play its Taiwan card.
America would have to do something. Pressure on the noodle would be to much.
Russia and China are sleeping together and that will bring about WW3. Its about time for one. Its been awhile.
Launching a full scale war in Europe with the objective to overturn a democratic elected government IMHO does not fall under the category "Politics". Politics is about stuff that you can have different opinions about.
It was a thread here about COVID. Even if covid has been politized, a pandemic by nature is not "politics". Risking that the whole world burns is also not "politics" - it's something that everyone can agree is a very bad idea.
I think most or many was concerned about covid when it came and that it felt good to share thoughts about it in a forum not at all related to the topic. I think a thread about a war in Europe that might lead to whatever could be seen the same way.
Should we really pretend that the war doesn't exist?
1) Everything ADAM said, I cannot disagree with, though I don't think it'll bring about WWIII. More like it'll bring about a massive shift in power, and in how we think about money. The short explanation is that all this sanction stuff will force the rise or crypto to replace traditional transfer mechanisms like SWIFT, and will likely even force the replacement of $USD as the global petrodollar standard. The only real questions is in which coin/method takes the fore (hint: It likely won't be BTC or any existing mineable coin). I don't think crypto will replace the everyday Joe's wallet contents, though. The average prole will likely still use whatever currency their respective nations bless for local use.
1a) I would add that the EU is posturing, but not much more. If Putin thought the EU were actually serious, he'd have shut off the gas taps, and things would suddenly get cold and dark in Central Europe. This may still happen, even if only as a demonstration. For our friends who live in Central EU, I humbly suggest stocking up on blankets and small, portable kerosene heaters.
2) I think that we're already approaching the end-game of Russia's Ukraine gambit. IMHO and nothing more: Putin wanted the two Eastern regions, wanted to ensure Kiev goes full-neutral and doesn't join NATO under any circumstance... and that's pretty much it. The two easternmost oblasts have been agitating to break away anyhow (whether organically or because of artificial agitation from Moscow is another debate).
The rest of this (including steamrolling in/about Kiev) is over-pressure to force the concessions... I say this because one, peace talks have begun today, and two, Putin has so far refrained from using methods of all-out war (e.g. carpet-bombing and total destruction/disruption of infrastructure) to fully blitz his way into the capital. I know about the DEFCON/nuke bluff, but IMHO it's just bluff (and/or perhaps a gentle reminder to certain other nations to butt out?)
Putin does have a time/resource problem long-haul, which is why everything to date has been as rapid as possible, yet scary-precise (at least insofar as war itself goes).
3) I have no problems with politics, as long as it is respectful and avoids alienation of others.
