I am trying to compress the .dhdm format with gzip. In fact, it accepts it, although it is somewhat cumbersome to do and time consuming as it requires saving the directory structure of folders, backing up the "data" folder, renaming the generated files as xxx.dhdm.gz with no extension ",gz", etc...
The problem I find is that despite not gaining much space (I think it's 11%..., there are about 2 and a half Gb of gain in 13Gb..., remaining at 11Gb), there are some dhdm that it does not accept, like Babina 8 HD, and some more.
Does anyone know the cause? Are there already compressed dhdm files or is there no general rule? I understand that the Dhdm format is arcane,,,February 16, 2022 at 11:52 AM #1777118Anonymous

I have never used it. Why not use 7-Zip and save yourself a headache. I've compressed a wide range of files with it and had no issues to date.February 16, 2022 at 3:35 PM #1777247The DHDM file is the Daz HD Tool creation file. It is forbidden to be used by anyone but a Daz Published Artist, so that is probably why no one can find info about it. The Daz HD Tool is only activated when someone is a Published Artist at Daz and signed an NDA agreeing that THEY MUST SELL ALL characters made with it at Daz3D. This rule got MANY vendors thrown out of Daz for selling creations made with the HD Tool, and containing DHDM files in their distributions. It is one of the reasons why vendors like Marcius got all 400 products thrown out of Daz3D along with many others. It was probably an oversight, but it happened with a 0 strikes your out policy.
I don't know why you would want to edit or add DHDM files to any Daz product unless you had access to the HD TOOL that is for Published Artists...
I'd be very interested in why you are doing it? It would be cool if we actually could finally create our own HD characters without relying on Daz internal tools.
Look forward to hearing more.

Thanks for making that clear. I never knew the vendors were so locked into a contract with them and DAZ were so intolerant of any misbehaviour. Sounds like an abusive relationship.
February 16, 2022 at 4:40 PM #1777280Well actually I'm using "Cygwin" and setting the path to "c:\cygwin64\bin" in environment system variables, even though there is a gzip.exe stadalone that can be used. (I'm more interested in the complete package, with Unix/Linux-like commands like Grep, Tar, etc..., which don't exist in the ms-dos command terminal...-I use linux since 1997...- )
The dhdm format, apparently, is an obj brought in from Z-Brush or something similar, and compressed into zlib.dll, which is the only compressor D|S uses. Although I've decompiled almost all the core D|S libraries with IDA Pro, I can't find the "open the can of anchovies" method. Nor changing the header in the hexa editor, which is a "d0 d0 d0 d0" or "ÐÐÐÐ" in ascii.
The funny thing is that in some files it works fine, and in others it doesn't. If I install something, I do it in a different folder than the one routed in D|S, to uncompress it, pass my minifier, recompress both duf and dsf, as well as textures. With the dhdm I am doing it with mediocre results -I have already said before that 11% less..., with command "gzip -9 xxxx.dhdm" or recursive in folder (-r), and then a batch to rename removing the extension ".gz"-.
Still there are some already compressed before being "encrypted" with a subroutine, and compression is redundant. These are my slow advances... But I don't give up on my efforts. 🙂
ah!, @ethiopia. No is the same a displacement map like the original dhdm..February 16, 2022 at 7:59 PM #1777332bah! @ethiopia, that's a picture of "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.", a marvelous film from 1953. By the way, highly recommended. 😀
And, yes, I am an expert (...) in reverse engineering. No more.February 16, 2022 at 8:29 PM #1777339 -
