I am trying to graduate from using HDRI products to my own lighting as a complete noob for lighting and camera but Daz is making it really hard. Iray Preview is useless for all practical purpose, in addition to being a ticking time bomb due to its memory leak. The shadows in Texture Shaded mode looks nothing like what will be in the Iray render and neither does Filament. So every lighting adjustment I made I have no idea what the impact of the change will be until the render comes out and that is a ridiculous time sink as I am doing it blind basically with every adjustment. This can't be how people learn to light in Daz.
February 15, 2022 at 11:14 AM #1776737"Iray Preview is useless for all practical purpose, in addition to being a ticking time bomb due to its memory leak" - a rather harsh statement, considering that everyone uses it. And what kind of memory leaks are you talking about?
Maybe your graphics card is not modern enough. My 1080ti does a good job with simple scenes, but I'm looking forward to the normalization of prices for 3090, because now in my country it costs $3K.February 15, 2022 at 11:37 AM #1776744Daz is full of memory holes and Iray Preview just exacerbates it. The random crash was true when I had 980 and still true now that I have 3090. I almost never crash running renders, even when I had 980. But running Iray Preview always results in random crashes after certain iterations even with 3090.
If using Iray Preivew is how people adjust lighting before final render then fine. People with knowledge of photography definitely don't need to run as many iterations before sending Daz to render mode thus avoiding my situation. In that case forget I ever asked.
February 15, 2022 at 11:39 AM #1776745@ethiopia, I used Lux when I was still sitting on Poser. A great render engine, but setting up materials took too much time. Has anything changed since then?
February 15, 2022 at 4:20 PM #1776802Yeah I would like to hear how the experts do it too 🙂
Best advice I can give for an on the flyish preview, use nvidia preview and the denoiser, set the start iteration to 0. The bigger the viewport the longer it takes to get an image. So, adjust the preview size and try to balance performance with usability.
February 15, 2022 at 10:14 PM #1776929I don't think I've ever had a crash using Iray Preview with either my old 980 or my current 2080. I goes to show that everyone has a unique experience with their hardware/driver configurations and version of DS. The Daz forums are full of stories of problems that others don't get and can't explain. Knock-on-wood.... every version of DS (and Poser) I've had has been remarkably stable.
