Hi!
Recently, for some reason, all Outoftouch hair take too long to load (28 sec - 1.30 min). Hair from other vendors are loaded instantly, even heavyweight dforce Classic Blowout Hair by Linday loads in less than 4 seconds.
Log says the problem is here:
23:38:20.137 Creating UV sets...
23:38:20.137 Creating materials...
23:39:12.933 Resolving legacy figures...
23:39:12.933 Preparing modifiers...A search in Google and on the Daz forum did not give anything.
I don't even know where to dig. Any ideas?February 8, 2022 at 10:08 PM #1774806It's the "Creating materials" step. That is the longest step when loading OOT hairs. For me, that step is about 9 seconds. For you it's 53 seconds.
I assume the "creating materials" step involves loading the large texture files and adding them to the geometry. Pull up Task Manager (or HWinfo) and watch your CPU, Disk and RAM usage when you load the hair. If your hair textures are located on a slow drive (like an older HDD), that could be the culprit. If your RAM or VRAM is maxed out, that would also slow it down.
Otherwise, it may be a Daz database issue. You could try resetting the database. But honestly Daz has so many database issues that I couldn't begin to know how to fix them.
February 8, 2022 at 10:46 PM #1774810@enjoyify, thank you so much for your interest in my problem.
I used to also think that the step followed by a long pause is problematic. But on the daz forum people explain that you need to watch the next step. Simply put, the string does not inform about the beginning of the operation, but on the contrary - about its completion. I checked this when I deleted the asset that was interfering with the G8 load. Before that, I deleted the wrong assets and the loading time hardly changed.Creating materials is hardly a problem. Because firstly, other hair load instantly, and secondly, I have the entire library on a fast M.2 SSD. Also, it's definitely not about hardware, since everything else loads quickly.
But resetting the database may be a good option. Only I have a question. I haven't reset the database for a long time and have made a lot of edits to the smart content since then. Resetting the database won't erase all these edits (categorize)?
February 8, 2022 at 11:14 PM #1774813I recently reinstalled Daz and OOT hairs load just as slowly. Daz asset loading is single threaded operation of small pieces of data, an I/O nightmare and testament to how crappy the Daz database engine is. Throwing more hardware won't help much. OOT hairs typically have more geometry and texture pieces than other PA hairs and even within OOT catalog some are heavier than others. Loading some OOT hairs is like loading a small scene and and requires almost as much time on my 5900X+NVMe combo of lightly installed Daz as it was on i5+SATA heavy Daz install.
dForce hairs load fast because it has fewer data to load. It's heavy on processing but that you can brute force with hardware. Using geometry also means it is more flexible. This is why games have started using geometry to boost graphics instead of more texturing that has been around for decades. OOT hairs still look better now but it will be obsolete eventually.
February 8, 2022 at 11:18 PM #1774815Interesting! I didn't know that. Do you know what "Resolving legacy figures" does?
Resetting the database will clear out your customizations, so don't do it without a backup. You'll want a full backup of your system in case it ruins everything. You'll also want to "Export User Data" from the Content DB Maintenance popup (Right click Content Library Tab-->Select Content DB Maintenance). After a reset you can re-import your user data that should have your smart content. The Daz forums have advice on that.
Beware that messing with the database can create as many problems as it solves. I did it once and it fixed my loading issues, but I can't say if it'll help you.
February 8, 2022 at 11:23 PM #1774816@i53570k, thanks for the answer.
I agree. And indeed the OOT hair were loaded slowly by everyone else always. But the problem is that they started loading really slowly quite recently for a completely incomprehensible reason to me. If earlier they were loaded in 10-15 seconds maximum, now it is more than a minute. Moreover, they are loaded into an empty scene instantly.February 8, 2022 at 11:30 PM #1774818@enjoyify, Resolving legacy figures - it was not possible to find out, the forums are silent on this topic.
Thanks for the instructions. Now I will think twice before I reset the database.February 9, 2022 at 1:44 AM #1774840@enjoyify - I don't know what resolving legacy issues are but sounds like it will add a lot to loading overhead 😛
@yngvarr - If the hair is loaded instantly into an empty scene but takes forever in some cases then it sounds very much like Windows memory swapping. What is the DRAM in your system? VRAM is also important but they don't affect asset loading but if you are having DRAM problem you likely will have GPU memory problem as well (unless you only do CPU rendering).
Edit: I didn't read the log in your OP. Were you trying to load OOT hair on legacy figures? Daz smooth modifiers can sometimes take very long time to process during load or even when change poses when used on figures stuff not designed for natively.February 9, 2022 at 12:50 PM #1775012@i53570k, still, I think that the problem is not in my hardware (32Gb DRAM) or software (everything else loads quickly), but in the daz itself. Something is causing some kind of conflict. And what and where is the problem. I'm not trying to load OOT hair on legacy figures (G8F). There is nothing older than G3 in my library at all. 95% of the content is G8.
This is the log of loading OOT hair into a new scene on an empty G8F basic.

February 9, 2022 at 3:12 PM #177505616 seconds seems normal to me. I would just recreate the character again from base G8F step by step and see what causes the spike in loading time.
