    So here is my question and it is most likely a stupid one so I will apologize upfront. I see a lot of Unreal content being posted of late and I wonder what I can do with it. I assume I need the free Unreal engine but then what? I have no interest in games. I work in Daz making many renders. Can I use Unreal to make renders? How hard is it to learn? What do the final results look like? Basically I'm looking to understand as much as I can do decide if I want to wade into an Unreal way of doing things. (see what I did there?)

    Any help or comments would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

    See this link. Unreal is a whole new ball game but the models can be imported into DS.

    This is exactly the kind of thing I've been wanting to learn but haven't gotten around to it yet. Thanks for asking, bobdawg!

    Is there a particular version to download if we want the things from here to work? I heard a rumor only 4 would work, but that could be wrong. A special way to install Unreal if we'll be using that kind of content? Downloading Unreal files and loading them in?

    A place with this kind of info would be really helpful if anyone knows of any. The blog mentioned above seems like a good source for tutorials, but I don't know if things work differently when the files come from here.

    Ouch. Now that is a complicated process getting assets into Daz. I think the answer for me might be to use Unreal. Anyone know how easy or difficult learning Unreal is? Daz attracted me because it has one of the easiest learning curves in 3D I have ever found.

    Ultimately it depends on what it is you wish to do.

    All software has strengths and weaknesses.

    Decide what it is you wish to do & take it from there.

    My first thought is that Unreal is a game engine & so focussed towards animation.

    If you want a decent single frame render I think Daz would do a better job.

    🙂

    @bobdawg

    If you want to render DAZ assets in Unreal it's a fairly easy process and Unreal has a great forum and tutorials to help you along. Here's a link to get you started with export and rendering.https://renderguide.com/daz-to-unreal-bridge-tutorial

    If you want to get into the game creation side of it that's different and takes time depending how many hours you put into learning. It depends how far you want to go.

    And if you find Meta humans interesting like me I hope you have good hardware because this part of unreal is hardware dependant and will eat most gaming type PC's for breakfast. My suggestion is to port models from DS to Unreal and vice versa to see which results suit you.

    @Ecthelion

    People using the DS to Unreal bridge for UE5 appear to be having problems so I would guess it's best to stick with UE4 until the issue is resolved.

    If you are worried about using using Unreal content from here I suggest disconnecting from the internet. Remember Unreal content can be purchased from stores from across the web so I wouldn't worry 🙂

    Can you use Unreal assets in Daz?

    Apparently you can. The method is somewhat like this-

    @bobdawg

    Yes you can.
    Export the asset as a FBX. Bake out the textures. Use a second program like Blender or 3DXChange to convert the FBX to a OBJ. Import the obj in DAZ. After this you still have to manually link all textures to the asset in DAZ.
    On the way you can get complete scenes from unreal to DAZ, but this will take a lot of time.
    I often do these actions, but for iClone.

    Better, use the GLTF plugin (free) for Unreal to export meshes and animations with textures.
    Import the gltf oglb in Blender or other sofware, and convert to fbx.

    @Abad

    Just tested the plugin. Converted the file to an fbx via Blender. You only have to add the ARM texture files manually after this. These ARM texture files are easy to split in Photoshop into AO-Roughness-Metalic.
    I have yet to test if an asset consisting of sub meshes works well.

    @realteamkiller. The truth is that I don't really like the export mode in Blender. For a Blender fbx, editing in MotionBuilder is a nightmare: Its bones are strange circles, without a typical definition. Normally I use Cinema 4D for conversions. In this link you can find a GLTF/GLB importer for C4D. Simply unzip the zip, and put the entire folder in your C4d path. folder /plugins Better to export in glb (binary GLTF...). Here I leave the link, (if you have Cinema 4D version r20/r24) It doesn't work in r25.

    Thanks for the link. I've a portable version of Cinema 4d R21.
    I'm going to try this tomorrow.

    But..be aware! Edit the materials in color, unchek "emission, alphas". :), and add some "subdivision
    surface" in C4d. Then , export in fbx 2013...
