About 20 or so years ago, I first got in contact with Poser, I think Victoria 3 was my first "model". Because a Pc was not so powerful in those days, I set up the scene, hit the render button and go to bed, to find my pc still working on that one image.
After Genesis got introduced, and the dyson importer didn't really do what he should, I abandoned Poser.
Half year ago I decided to give Das Studio a go, and after finding all the knobs and dials I got enthusiast again.
20 Years of progress has made the figures, clothes etc much more realistic.
Am I the only one to expect to be able to make my own ( simplified) version of Avatar?
Meaning that the quality of the software combined with the ever increasing power of computers would give us simple mortals the tools to really create our own movies?
Curious how you guys see the future.....

I reckon that both hardware and software will need to progress a lot further before we can expect that. Even massive render farms take days to animate segments for movies, toon ones at that. I'll be pushing up the daisies long before hobbyists get anywhere near that on one PC. Maybe quantum computing will help, but they've been saying that for years.
Lots of people make animations using Poser/DS but quite frankly I have neither the time nor inclination to spend days tying up my computer to do so.

I hear what you say, but when you think about the first mission to the moon...the average cellphone now a days has more computing power And that was in '69
I must admit I am a sucker for graphic software. Can't draw a flower if my life depended on it. I work with clay, I guess it is called sculpting.
So dabbled with Maya, 3DMax etc, but found it al to complex ( down side of modern progs, to much possibilities, therefore learning is a bitch)
But computer grafics like Poser an Das give me the possibility to create "studies"
Only trouble is, once you get into it, one always sets a higher goal after every successful render ๐Ÿ˜‰

Canโ€™t draw a flower if my life depended on it.... I'm in that club, and that's the great gift that 3D software give to the otherwise artistically ungifted. Same with musical talent... give me any musical instrument and I'll hold it up-side-down or back-to-front.
The value of art making, aesthetics and appreciation remains a very contentious subject and while my 3D thing is striving for realism, the only truly honest from-the-heart pieces I've really valued has been the stuff given to me by children, my own and those in my classes at school.
Perhaps maybe because of the fact that only young children are completely truthful open and honest.

Daz3d is often critized for being an outdated software generally. My biggest problem is that it only use two cores. That means that you cannot throw money on the problem (=buying poweful hardware).

My highest wish is that Daz would utilize multiple cores, not that I would make animations, but I could include as many characters, hairs etc without having a zaggy viewport.

As said above, it takes a LOT of computing power to make something like Avatar, but with Daz, it doesnt matter how much computing power you have as long as it only supports two cores. A sollution could be to have an ultra customized CPU overclocking as that would actually make a difference.

I am not very techy so I keep dreaming of multicore instead...

    HI there,
I didn't know about the 2 core thing.
I also have "problems"if I fill the stage with to many characters etc
Don't know if you have tried Billboard Builder?
I create the characters, turn them into 2d, and place them in the scene.
    Option 2
Fill the stage, hide everything but 1 character, render, save as PNG
Do this with all the objects in the scene
Open Photoshop and stack all the PNG images on op of each other, and save as JPG
    Hope this helps, greets Gaver

@Chonakz, Studio uses multiple cores for rendering (and dforce, which uses your GPU as well) but is single-core (actually single-thread) for a lot of what you do in the viewport. Multi-thread processing isn't a magic bullet either and in some circumstances can be much slower that single-thread for the same task and unfortunately a lot of the stuff you do in the viewport would not benefit for multi-thread processing because there's no way to parallelise the operation, or if there is, it's less efficient than a single thread running the same task. More and faster RAM and VRAM make bigger performance improvements than the number of threads or cores.

To give a somewhat s*** analogy, it's like building a house; you have to do things in a certain order, starting with the foundations, then the walls, the roof, and finally the interior. You could have all the trades turn up on day one of the build, but all the carpenters, bricklayers, plumbers, roofers, electricians, labourers and painters would be stood around watching while the guy driving the excavator digs the foundations.

@SkippyTheMeh Yes, I have heard that argument but also the counter argument that if CAD/CAM and many gaming platforms can utilize multithreading- so can DAZ3D also do. It's true that not everything can be done parallelly but a LOT can. My CPU never goes over the 35% when working with the viewport and there is plenty of free memory as long as I don't have a lot of other things going. The only time CPU and memory goes into red a short while is when it is loading the GPU, that means that that part is multithreaded.

    @Gaver

Yes I have used billboards quit a bit but it has limited use for me.

Yes, I have tried Billboard Builder but only a little to see that it was actually working.
One thing that concerned me was that the 2d-billboards appears to become much brighter than it should be to melt in naturally. But as I said I have not tested a lot.

Have you had any issues with the billboards becoming to bright or are they melting in as they should? I really hope Billboard Builder is a useful tool, it would be amazing!

    @Gaver

I can't even say what is billboards and not!

Are all characters here billboards or only the soldiers in the background?

Same here: what is and what is not billboards?

    OK @Gaver !

Looks good, they really melt in. Will redo my efforts in testing this tool! Thanks!

If this 15 year old kid and his 3090 can do it, so can you. Yeah, I realize not everyone has a 3090, but if you're going to be making a movie of the highest caliber possible, let us not pretend it wouldn't take a thousand years longer on a 1070.

It would take time. It would take work. It would require you to relearn how to think of modeling and 3D software.

You have two major issues holding you back:
    1. You use DAZ
    2. You think like a DAZ user

DAZ wasn't made to be a movie making software. It's not optimized in the slightest. DAZ assets are fantastic, but they are laughably heavy when it comes to resources. I remember being shocked the first time I opened up a daz dress after a while working with video game assets. The number of vertices! OMG! The image sizes can be ridiculous too.

These guys making these amazing scenes are stripping away every unnecessary thing. Low poly, low samples, optix denoise if you can, procedural shading. Camera tricks like DOF and low lighting help disguise things that are lower quality, and the high quality stuff gets placed closer to the camera. Adaptive subdivision. A thousand little things to cut down render times. Switch to Eevee if you must.

Start thinking like this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whPWKecazgM

This is all Blender centric because that's the world I come from, but I imagine the same/similar goes for if you're an Unreal user, Max, whatever. And even I barely know what I'm talking about because I've just barely touched the world beyond still renders. My point is that you can wait until judgment day, but I don't think DAZ will ever get to the point of making Avatar. In another program? It's already possible, but it's not easy or fast. The fact we home users can do it at all is pretty incredible if you ask me.

Thing is , you set up youre scene, so the lighting and shadows will all come from/in the same direction, and light intensity is equal..
As said hide the rest and make a billboard, repate with second item etc
You could even render them separte an d make layers in Photoshop so you cab tweak light etc, use png for it
    Have fun
