I know I asked a related question before, but I got no response, so here goes again lol! I was wondering if there exists a hair product that looks very similar to dForce Ingrid Hair by April YSH, but that isn't as resource heavy.
The Ingrid hair is beautiful and it's ideal for the scene I have in mind, but unlike April YSH's other hair products (which are all wonderful) it's a nightmare to render.
On my old system, I wasn't too surprised because it wasn't exactly ideal for Iray rendering and had such wear and tear over the years, I put it down to that, as there were many products that fell back to CPU and froze the system, until eventually it unfroze. However; even though my new PC isn't the top of the range, it gets the job done - unless the scene is massive and needs to be tweaked, yet the Ingrid hair is causing the exact same problems. First of all, I tried rendering it on a model with low resolution textures and no clothes - it still fell back to CPU and the memory consumed was astromical. Next, I tried rendering the hair by itself - same problem. I tried using Decimator - it reduced the body of the hair to nothing and just left the hair base cap. I also used Scene Optimizer - made no difference.
I would really appreciate it if someone could give me some tips, tell me if they've also had this problem, or failing that, else suggest a very similar hair style that I could use, because I'm fresh out of ideas now. I do have Blender but I'm still only learning how to use it, but if someone could tell me whether or not I can reduce the polygons there, then import it back into Daz, I would very, very much appreciatte it.
November 23, 2021 at 7:32 AM #1751338Portia Hair 2, by the same vendor?
Or even the first one?
Older hairs can look very good with modern IRay shaders.
🙂

November 23, 2021 at 9:47 AM #1751351@hig27 Thanks for the tip. I've tried out the hair and it looks pretty good. Which shaders would you recommend? I usually use FSL Realistic Hair Shaders for Iray and Filament. They work pretty well on most hair; do you have any better recommendations?

November 23, 2021 at 4:20 PM #1751437A reasonable alternative could be Eilis Hair: https://zonegfx.com/eilis-hair-for-genesis-3-8-females/

So sad that Joanna AKA SAV passed away; she was always really helpful and made great products.
November 24, 2021 at 8:17 AM #1751571Thanks so much @eelgoo, @chonakz, @hamster, @ColdBeer31 for all of your help. I tried out all the hair suggestions and they look great with the recommended shaders.
Just thought I'd share this tip courtesy of someone called skinklizzard which I discovered last night after searching all the threads on the Daz forums pertaining to dforce hair that consumes too much memory: ''select the hair, then in parameters pane under general > line tesselation. you will see options for line tesselation sides both viewport and render.
a value of 3 will make each strand a triangular tube which will nuke your vram with geometry, for render you can try 1 but results vary and the hair might not look good, I usually use 2 for ribbons though.
if its already at 1 then I'm not sure what you can do, there might be surface settings to reduce geometry but those will have a fairly large effect on the looks''
It actually works on the majority of difficult to render dForce hair and the end result doesn't look that much different from what it would normally look like, even with the reduction. All credit to Skinklizzard for that trick, just thought I'd share it here so as that anyone else who might have a similar problem to mine can save themselves a long trawl through the Daz forums looking for a solution.
Again, guys thanks so much. I'm loving all of the shaders and the hair suggestions. 🙂
