Seeking opinions on how to maximize performance in Studio. Mostly, performance in initial loading of objects, specifically characters. I have tons of morphs but morphs are a killer when it comes to load times of the figure they are applied to.
Example on my PC:
G8F with a few hundred add-on morphs installed loads in 20 minutes.
G8F with base-morphs-only installed loads in 4 seconds (fresh install of Studio).I'd like to have access to the thousand-plus morphs I have procured without bringing my PC to a standstill on loading times. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
December 16, 2020 at 1:12 PM #1650278Wow 20 minutes!? I store all my daz files on a separate NAS drive and even having to load over my network on a GIGABIT connection only takes about 3 mins for a similar G8 load. What sort of drives are you using?... Old 5400rpm hdd's? If so I'd say that is almost surely the bottleneck in your system, in which case a cheap SSD drive even if it's just for your Daz content if budget is tight would make a night and day difference.
December 16, 2020 at 1:32 PM #1650279i have the same problem - i primarily use G8M and i think i have 95% of available morphs for him.
i had the plans ready for the coolest custom pc and was about to order parts but then the pandemic.....
December 16, 2020 at 3:08 PM #1650306I have an internal 1 Tb SSD drive on a 6 Gb i/o bus for my daz Content Library folder (loaded content), Studio app is on a 500 Gb m.2, 64 Gb ddr4 ram with a quad-channel memory bus, and my processor is a 6 core Xeon Haswell. Doubtful it is my hardware.
I do get a couple of warnings in the log file for one of the morphs, but 20 fricking minutes?
I reinstalled DS, so I have a virgin install. I suppose I could load every morph one at a time and restart DS each time and see if there's an offending morph that's causing the problems.
December 16, 2020 at 3:47 PM #1650322I can tell you that I have seen a lot of chatter from folks showing load times have dramatically increased in 4.14. They show load times in 4.12 and 4.14 side by side and invariably 4.14 had a fairly drastic slow down comparatively. I mean we're talking about 200%+ increase. I went down that rabbit hole as I have struggled with the 5-10 minute load times for scenes with a couple figures in it. And I also have a fairly beefcake system. There was mention of a utility that someone had created that allowed you to easily blank out large portions of your morphs from loading and it helped... some. But not really enough to justify having to constantly figure out which of the 2000 morphs you do or do not want to load each time. So, at this point I'm hoping that this becomes a priority for DAZ to fix in an upcoming patch.
December 16, 2020 at 5:08 PM #1650340I find its less of an issue w/ drive access speed and more with tons of morphs installed it just wants to sit there and "think" my loading characters isnt too bad,.. but before I lightened my runtime I'd have this huge pauses when I'd try and change poses or spin a dial, which just made working unbearable. I lightened the morph load which sucks to have to pick and choose what to install. but it drasticly improved performace,.. and for reference, I'm running on a 7700k w/ 32gigs of ram and Studio and content is installed on a m.2 970 evo so its not slow
December 16, 2020 at 11:34 PM #1650409I have seen increased load times but 20 minutes? Damn... My figures, fully clothed with multiple sets grouped up, and custom morphs usually take 5 mins at most. I have noticed that models I convert from G3 to G8 take longer though. I'm not sure what your issue is but I hope you get it sorted out! 20 minutes...
December 17, 2020 at 12:20 PM #1650541I have decided to load 5 morphs at a time and then restart DS each time. As I said above, it's probably either a tool or morph set that is causing the problem. Hopefully, the logs will show me what's screwing up.

How do you decide which morphs to load?I have around 8Gb only in data folder/ genesis 8. My load time is around 25 seconds for G8F or 20 in G8M. No more. If you have the plugin "Look at my hair", rename the dll´s, then, try to look the time. My plugin "Console" is for explain the same log.txt, and you can see the problems, like "Warning: .......". 20 minutes is too very expensive!!! I have a old laptop 8Gb ram, and all the content in a USB 3 external disk no SSD!!December 17, 2020 at 11:14 PM #1650620I have 1TB ssd internal and my Daz studio is on it but none of the content.
Its spread across 25TBs of drives My G8 loads with a bunch of morphs
( not 2000 worth) load time is 30 seconds full saved scenes from 2 to 3 mins
it took longer before I installed a gtx 1070 now it flies. No problems with 4.14 yet
cross my fingers.
Hope you get it sorted.December 18, 2020 at 9:12 AM #1650686Maybe we haven't stopped to think about how many "Morphs" we have. It is clear that the appetite for "New characters", free to download, impels us to make such a collection of "extra" content. It is a serious mistake that we must take in conscience. "More does not mean better." It must be time to question what we need, what we use, and what things make bulk and excessive use of the capabilities of a computer.
I bet on being very fearful of installing trifles, and focusing on a few models that are essential, not having 200 characters of any Daz model. More if it fits in HD models, that Daz hides its "Dhdm" format code. Apart from avoiding morph errors, such as what we can see in the log.txt, (easier with Console ...) and editing with DSON Editor, we must avoid the unraveling of content. Many of the Zev0 articles (For example ..), take up a lot of hard disk space, and that means time in RAM, apart from textures, which differ from RAM because they need a "parser", and that, all together to them their digestion time.December 18, 2020 at 9:51 AM #1650694I keep my frequent used morph and flavor of the month morph( which I rarely use anyway, damn human hoarder's psychology is a bitch I guess) in separate folder, and only link the FOTM morph in when I need them.
You might try this trick out, it might save you a minute or two of load times.
Anyway just forcus on the really essential morph, like 200 face morph, rarestone face morph ... EtcDecember 18, 2020 at 12:07 PM #1650723@abad I am picking the ones that I think I'll use the most. My data folder was over 25 gig before I reinstalled DS and my Content Library. I only use G8 so almost all my morphs are for G8F/M. I'm thinking it's one of the tools that I loaded that ground DS to a halt. I'll figure it out if my plan works.
December 21, 2020 at 6:28 AM #1651682You can try using either Scene exporter or Content Gatherer as a workaround for having so many morphs. Those two programs lets you extract every asset being used on a scene. Make another new directory and put all your chars and customization morphs in there(Just data folders, can keep textures.) That fat slow directory will only be added when making new chars for your scene. After making your chars for your scene and saving them as scene/preset, you extract with either one of those 2 programs I mentioned and add the extracted assets as another new directory while temporarily removing the other now unused character/customization fatass directory. Can add/remove that slow directory whenever you're making chars.
It won't take forever to load and be all slow and clunky anymore atleast when posing in your scene. It'll only be slow whenever you use that fat directory to make a new char.
