Mosasaurs were a fairly successful group of marine reptiles that rose to dominance around 86 million years ago. They were not dinosaurs but evolved from a group resembling monitor lizards. Like cetaceans, over their evolution they adapted to a fully marine existence, with limbs developing into flippers and a rigid tail for propelling at great speeds. Ranging in size from 1 meter to some 16 meters in length, Ammonoids were frequent prey, but they likely fed on fish and possibly other marine reptiles.
