    Is anyone using the Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 Ti for rending Iray scenes? How is it working for you?

    Benchmarks say it's very similar to the RTX 2080 Super but the 3060 Ti is much cheaper than the 2080S was.
    I think it would be OK but the 3060 has 12gb of VRAM compared to the 3060 Ti with 8gb. This will limit the size (memory load) of the scenes you will be able to do without DS going to CPU rendering ie. painfully slow.
    The Ti has more CUDA cores so should theoretically render faster but I reckon an extra 4gb of VRAM is more important for DS.

    You can take a look at this thread: (https://zonegfx.com/forums/topic/in-the-market-for-a-new-graphics-card/)

    Everybody gave good info on this and if you read through it, pay attention to Queensknight's posts. Some highlights:

    If your graphics card has 8GB RAM, you'll need 32GB system RAM for daz to unpack scenes. You need 4x the amount of system RAM for daz to utilize the full amount of graphics RAM. If you have a 12GB graphics card and 32GB system RAM, daz will limit the graphics RAM to 8GB. So if you have a 12GB video card, you'll need 48GB system RAM.

    If you run out of video RAM while rendering daz will kick off into using the CPU instead of the graphics card. If that happens you can expect things to go extremely slow.

    I've been looking to upgrade my system and the cost of the 3060 12GB version WITH more system RAM will cost me the same as buying a 3060Ti. ~$500

    The 12GB version is better if you can manage to get the required 48GB system RAM. The way you have to look at this is that if you run out of RAM on the graphics card, then the system will chug. This is true for video games as well and even though the Ti is rated ~20-30% faster it won't make a bit of difference if you run out of video RAM. The 3060 12GB will continue to hold strong even with high resolution settings because of the 4GB extra RAM. I posted a video in that thread that showed the 3060 12GB out performing a 3070Ti(I think?) in a benchmark test on max settings in a video game and it was because the 3070Ti ran out of video RAM.

    I haven't purchased it yet because I need $ for other upgrades on this PC but I've made up my mind on the 3060 12GB, it's the clear winner for DAZ and PC games on ultra settings @1080p with potential to roll into and hold up @4K.

    Side note, be aware that the 3060 series doesn't have the ability to link with multiple cards, only of few of the 3000 series do(don't recall which offhand).

    Hope that helps you. 🙂

    I would say it's a "higher budget card". I have two 3060TI ( STRIX OC LRH version - LHR: you can't mine with it efficiently 😀 ), but I use them mainly for my displays. I tried it, you can render many great things with it but sooner or later you will be limited by it's 8GB VRAM, so it's not for big-big scene renderings ( if you optimize your scene, it's not impossible tho ). I wouldn't choose the older 12GB version, I find it better if the card has more Cuda Cores, because of the rendering times/performance ( tho I'm training AIs too, so I'm a bit biased in this question 😀 ).

    Thanks for the info. I do have the 3060, and already had 64 GB of RAM when I bought the card. I bought my machine maxed-out on RAM because at the time RAM was expensive (might still be, haven't checked) and it was just cheaper to get it all at once. I went from a 1060 to a 3060 and have no regrets. Got good money from selling the 1060 - apparently they're still used heavily in the gaming community.

    My machine is a freaking BEAST. I used to build them all the time, but arthritis kicked in and I can't lean over to build one without my back aching. I still put in parts, though.

    Thank you, it is. Right now, I am looking to buy a new machine - one of them has a RTX 3090 Founders Edition with 24 GB of VRAM and 128 GB of memory - that's going to run me $2500 (the video card alone is about $1500).

    For $600 less, I can get one with the Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 Ti and 64 GB of memory. At this point, I'm wondering if the extra $600 is worth it for the RTX 3090?

    Man, after reading this thread I've moved on. I'm getting the 4070Ti. It has a good amount of speed, 12GB video RAM and it has a relatively low power consumption. I have a 750w gold psu and it requires 700w. The card runs about $800-900 and its comparable with the 3090. You might want to look into that.

    If i had the choice between the 4070 ti and a used 3090 i d totally go for the 3090 for the extra memory but it doesnt have much to do with what the op asked anymore 🙂

    I hate that I'm even entertaining the idea of paying more then $500 for a graphics card. I promised myself that I wouldn't do that but here I am. If the 3090 was $800, then I would get it.

    1.5k is totally over the top for a 3090 assuming you mean USD, you absolutely should not be paying MSRP for a card that's almost 3 years old.

    Used 3090s go for $700-800 or so on the market, these make more sense.

    So if my PC is limited to 16GB of ram, would installing a 12gb 3060 be pointless?

    @Krazee

    Why is your PC limited to 16GB Ram?

    If its that old... maybe grab $600 and go to Micro Center and get this deal
    AMD Ryzen 9 7900X + ASUS X670-P Prime Mobo + 32GB G.Skill Flare DDR5-6000

    @krazee
    If the system ram is 16GB then the max video RAM that daz will utilize before switching over to the CPU is 4GB. It would be basically pointless for you to get a 12GB video card for daz.

    Another thing to consider, I could be wrong about this but windows locks down some of the system RAM so that's something that probably needs to be accounted for as well. So perhaps if windows is locking down 2GB of your 16GB system ram, that would leave you with 14GB and the max RAM you could get from a video card is 3.5GB?

    For a 3060 12GB card you would need 48GB system RAM + what ever windows takes to utilize the full potential of the card. Maybe someone could verify this?

    @chupacabre409

    I have a 3060 12gb GPU & 32gb system RAM and you are correct, I can only use 8gb on the GPU (without the CPU selected for render) Thankyou for making me aware of this fact, I will order another 32gb of RAM and let you know if I can use the full 12gb on the GPU.

    Cheers

    You're welcome. Just to let you know, it was Queensknight who mentioned that in a post I was asking about the 3060ti vs 3060 12GB. Dude knows his stuff. 🙂

    I'm not quite sure how the whole thing works with what windows is locking down. I'm on the verge of getting a 12GB card here soon and I'll be upgrading from 32GB to 64GB system RAM. Windows locking RAM down won't be a problem for me because I only need 48GB to utilize the full video RAM; I'm just curious how that works.

    If daz allows you to utilize 8GB with 32GB system RAM then I suppose what windows is locking down isn't something accounted for. Interesting.
