    Yeah 3d content creation is a whole thing, and if you get out of it for any length of time you have to reskill... which is what i'm doing right now. Thank whoever that 3dsMAX has continued to exist throughout the years (and that autodesk is the 3d powerhouse eating all the other companies 😀 ) so I always have a baseline to work from.

    That said, the tools for 3d content creation that exist now are so much more user friendly than they were 20 years ago when I first tried to make a model for a game mod... add to that that youtube can teach you pretty much any skill you want to learn and it really comes down to the desire to do it over the ability to learn it.

    THAT said, good modellers are a dime a dozen, but that combination of a good artist, with good technical skills, and good concepting skills, and the ability to take that whole process to a game ready (or film ready, or animation ready or whatever it is) is definitely a lot rarer than someone who can just make a static sexy thing.

    Maybe one day I'll finally get down to it and try my hand at modeling... seems so involved.. patience is a factor with me... I looked very carefully at different options when I decided to give 3D a try, and I settled on Daz because it seemed the highest quality, AND the most open-and-go, which I assumed would be the best option for me because I want results. hahaha... but it would probably be wise to bite the bullet, wouldn't it....

    @Tomsk

    I forgot about that one entirely, actually... Yes, I do have that one in my collection.

    I do not think DAZ studio is really for Art creation in the general accepted sense of the term (which is endlessly debatable). But it could be put to good use for illustrative functions. For instance I am not an artist (extremely poor finger coordination) and Daz allows me to create fake pictures (evidences for plots) and character sheets for my RPG games and stories, I think it is a good point. It helps me being more inventive, broadening my perspectives and I have lots of sceneries... It is true I would need various period clothes for men and women, but you can find approximations.
    I do not think one can live by producing only Daz art or stuff, it remains a hobby. You can learn interesting things however, notably how light works and so on....
    As a last note I am surprised by the lack of originality and luster of the promo pics at Daz and rendo (and they are even worse at renderotica) most are not at all eye catching (and you know they are supposed to try their best), some potentially good products may have been ruined by this trend.

    Though I am a traditional artist (analog art), my last medium before 3D was model photography. I had my camera stolen, and what's more, I was just sick to death of working with people, limited location and wardrobe, and the over-saturation of lackluster local photography. I guess I got Daz to continue my model photography with more freedom and resources. I can do loads more than I could ever have done as a real-world photographer, and thankfully my skills have translated rather well to the program. But it's true I need to move on at some point if I either want to truly make art or even somewhat make money.

    Which reminds me... anyone know anything about the legality of selling prints of this stuff?

    If you're still after an Indy hat @jbuckland1984 have you seen this set? https://www.daz3d.com/diana-and-jones-outfit-for-genesis-2-male-s-and-female-s
    there's also a hat in this bundle https://www.daz3d.com/fwsa-vampire-expansion-and-hunter-kit-for-genesis-3-male-s

    In regard to Daz models on the whole being built similarly and "pretty". Just look at mainstream media as a cue and you'll see Daz models reflect the "pretty" ideals. Look through mens and womens magazines and you'll see pages and pages of good looking people that look very similar and dress in the "fashionable" style.

    If you're thinking it's just porn and fantasies that perpetuates this image, you're wrong, it's just a little more prevalent in 3D models because you can make them do what you want, whereas actual people have a say in what they do.

    You absolutely nailed it there! 🙂

    @jbuckland1984

    Yes, the idealised dolls are very formulaic & repetetive & there is a lot of lack lustre dross.
    The Daz world can be very creative, but the mainstream output can be lazy & dull. It is worth searching around in detail though, because there are a few gems amongst the maelstrom of mediocrity. In time you will pick out your own favourite vendors who appeal to your style.

    It is also worth bearing in mind that Daz Studio is a asset manipulation program rather than geared up for asset creation.
    On the whole, I reckon it is pretty good at what it intends to do, especially for free software

    I've come to find over the years that Sturgeon's Law is heavily applicable to the Poser/Daz world in so many regards. I also remember at a con, Brian Haberlin was giving a panel about how to use Poser in a comic workflow, and he pretty much said that Poser (and by extension, Daz) has a really trashed reputation among artists because of the mediocrity softcore porn. Which is prevalent for the reasons @evilmonkey and @eelgoo said.

    That said, you do eventually find vendors you like and are willing to support monetarily to make more content that stands out from the same old Malibu Staceys with new hats. It just takes a lot of digging and searching to find them, unfortunately.

    I myself like Uzilite, Arki, IH Kang, Aeon Soul, SickleYield, Deacon (who's on Rendo), Fabiana, Sshodan, Sixus1, RedzStudio, Samsil, BadKittehCo, Saiyaness, Linday, and DarwinsMishap. They have product -past and present- that stands out from the crowd, even when they're sometimes variations on the 'same old, same old'.

    I'll agree with the OP, it is frustrating to constantly search through the cruft, but I've discovered a ton of PAs that I love supporting thanks to ZGFX, haha.

    @corbeau
    I've heard some people say that exact same thing on the DS forums, and they've gone as far to say that Iray is being used as a crutch in some cases. To an extent, I agree with them.

    I don't think Daz or Poser are responsible for mainstream ideals; not at all.
    But I do think PEOPLE are responsible for rising above that. I don't read magazines, I watch very few television shows; I can avoid all that. I can't avoid it in the 3D world, because I'm working within it. No one controls what they see on billboards or on magazine covers at the grocers... But in this corner of society... where we all create to some degree or another... I think people might try to be a little more original.

    And, no, I'm not above making erotic art, I have a few pieces myself... but for me it's just to mix things up, work out some inner stuff. I try not to fixate. I don't know. Now I just sound elitist. hahahaha...

    What do I know?

    I've only just noticed the porn creation in the last few years, though admittedly I have never been much of one for paying attention to porn and pornographic images... erotica has usually been my poison of choice. My imagination's far more entertaining.

    I've always used Daz Studio and Poser before it for creating character pictures for my RPG characters. I've also created the odd background for my computers at home and at work and I've tried the "I'm an artist" thing without much success. There's very few things I grumble at my autism for but the lack of true creativity is one of them. But yeah, I've seen the large tits, hourglass, sweet face with luscious lips trend for many many years. And very few of my roleplaying characters fit that trope so it can be tricky. I get tired of seeing them everywhere too.

    At times, I use them and see if I can find a makeup to cover the worst of it because I'm impatient and find it difficult to spend the hours tweaking the morphs to what I find acceptable. I'm also a click and I'm done pose user...

    .....I really need to put more effort into my images >.<

    But the worst part for me is that often you can see the trends skipping across from other media. Lately, I've noticed Vikings having a big influence. Supernatural's been around the edges but that show's lack of female characters means it's been a bit slow on the uptake. Then you have the various female celebrities...

    Sometimes I wonder if any of the PAs have creative juices left after cranking out so much over the years just to keep up with the constant demand for new stuff. Though I have to admit I'm glad whenever I see Sveva or OOT has released something new.

    Got it!
    AND I don't have to wrestle with that goddamned M4 Bad Guy shoulder holster, either... it's a bitch, because I don't use 4th generation models, but I have clothes I can't find for genesis... like my Original Series Star Trek uniforms... can't use them because they're made for M4 and V4...

    Btw, I dusted off my Indiana Jones and worked on it a little... will post in a couple minutes...

    Looking at this again for the first time in a few months, I guess I'm more or less satisfied with everything but the shirt (not sure if it's a poor modeling job or the result of fitting it to a different generation)... but where am I going to find a World War I English officer's shirt? (don't answer that; I'm going to be picky as hell about this one...) The face still needs work, but that's entirely my problem... Maybe it's time I finish this one... Indy fanart has kind of been my dream since I started Daz...
