I really don't know why they announced so early, I can imagine G8 product sales will probably nose dive.
September 24, 2022 at 1:20 pm #1870698@eelgoo Totally agree. It's strange how they released a new 8.1 character the very next day (Assassin Bundle). 🤦♂️
September 24, 2022 at 1:47 pm #1870704All valid points. 🙂
September 24, 2022 at 6:34 pm #1870771PREORDER? sounds like they want to create excitement or money grab. . preorder?? on a downloadable object?? like they going to run out of product. its a character not a video card...retarded
September 25, 2022 at 4:32 am #1870878@legolas18 "Outfits should work with G9"
Yes. Per the Auto-Fit dialogue on inject, most clothing and figure-parented assets should be fine.
"As for heels (G3 to G8 works, after all) and hair (hopefully with no loss of bones), they should be compatible too."
Maybe not so much. Many/most hair and footwear assets have been unresolvable from G3 to G8 over the years, for example, and have required third party conversion tools to come close (and not always complete) to adaptation. (I believe this is why we've seen less, not more, footwear product from great artists, for example, since G8. Why make it if another Gen is going to make it obsolete?.) It is possible to bring G3 hair in to G8 without great issue on some products, but not others. Depends greatly on the original creator and of their forethought in modeling and rigging. Adapting/adjusting outside of that and resaving as a G8 compatible figure is possible, of course, but depends on the capabilities of the original asset. Sometimes that perfect G3 morph dial just doesn't exist to force a G8 fit. (I greatly hope that creators are keeping G9 forward-compatibility in mind when continuing to create G8/8.1 content from now for example. Because they can.) Other than that, expertise in export/remodel/import has had to happen.
I estimate it will be the same with G8 to G9 assets."What’s next? Poses and Smart props….maybe? But, given that a conversion has been made from G1, G2, G3, and G8 already, I don’t really see why not. Not perfect, but possible."
Many of those "conversions" are crap. Between G3 and G8, for example, it's often easier to just go back to using the simple A & T G3toG8 pose morphs floating around (or make your own), and inject non-convertible poses and anims from G1/G2 and be done with it.

@littlepleasures "Every time a new generation is introduced everybody loses their goddamn minds, as if they’re being forced into an upgrade path against their wills. Similarly, people ask for newer/more/better and yet when it’s presented to them they want to know “but why isn’t it compatible with obsolete trash from 20 years ago?!”"Werd. And goes back to your previous points about "DAZ User Expectations".
You can expect all you want. DAZ is what it is, isn't what it is not, and won't change because you wish it or will it to. Advise to carry on with what you've got, or walk away if it frustrates past a point. And, agreed, if we all just keep harping on keeping the old content compatible while clamoring for improvement, it just keeps development in a perpetual paralysis. I, for one, have been wholly relieved at the G8 lifespan, for example; if for no other reason than the sheer amount of content created for it. For 5 years I haven't had to think twice about compatibility between Generations, mostly, because I shifted to a product that actually stuck around. It would be fantastic if G8 assets were G9 compatible. But if (if) I move over to G9, I know and "expect" to have to adapt - lest the cost to progress.
If the devs make a concerted choice to improve the platform, they choose to improve the platform. That will come down to their motivations to do so. Not a whole lot of motivation to change if they're making money on what they want, how they want it, now - and when all they have to put up with to do so is some minor squeaking noises coming from the wheels.
Only thing I see changing that is if they made MORE money doing it all a different way. It would take a LOT of money, and it would take a LOT of dedication, though. And I could definitely see that forcing the departure from the "free model".
So, "be careful what you wish for".---------------------
@frank22 "Yes, after the presentation there were a lot of people with their knickers in a bunch about the new 8K textures, “OMG I’ll need to buy a 4090 for DS!”, which weren’t textures at all but normal maps."Exactly.
I don't know that people even know what the 8K refers to. They just think, "Oh, cool, they're up to the same level as the 'big boys' now. Finally some respect in the CG community", and "Guess I have a good excuse for a hardware upgrade".
What a sad and ironic joke.
And, what a waste. Of good hard drive space if nothing else.
For all DAZ-level intents and purposes, 4K is PLENTY of resolution. I have NEVER enountered a closeup in DAZ (the only place you would ever even need the 4K, btw) that "required" more. I honestly don't know that DAZ is even capable of capitalizing on full 4K in the first place. I know >I've< never hit that ceiling. In any render. Ever. The "under the hood" deficiencies of DAZ have nothing to do with materials. That's a consistently sad and horrible red herring. The pinch-point in getting to realism (the only motivator I could ever glean from moving to 8K, besides schoolyard peer-pressure politics), is not in the maps, it's in the code. It's in the render engine. The problem isn't in the shader system, it's in frickin DAZ Iray.
If we're wishing for things, >I< wish they'd spend more time on that, than on pointless "upgraded skin materials".
I fear that all 8K is going to do in DAZ is slow down the already less than desirable render times. Along with potentially increasing load and save times depending on the library content and hardware.
And why? To see detail you already don't see now with 4K and never will?---------------------
@d0gg0d "My opinion is its mostly for casual users and digital artists. I think it fills that role pretty well." ... "The nice thing is it has a huge supply of created content. It’s really not for content creators IMHO its for content users. If you’re skilled enough to design a person from a digital mudball I’ve no idea what you would be using Daz for. One issue I see is the quality of what current tech is capable of. You can basically scan a person and create near real quality and only people with a skilled eye for such things could pick out a fake. With the other character software out you can create characters on the fly. That I think is something Daz can do if you have enough morphs loaded but its just not as fluid. I will admit Id rather see more effort going into the program than into a model."This ^.
Exactly and absolutely.
See "What DAZ is / what DAZ isn't", lower the expectations, and "push" for more focused and better intended changes, and you might actually get to something better. Otherwise, deal with what you got cause it aint gonna change inside a self-eating system.---------------------
@littlepleasures "In regard to people freaking out about textures or maps that’s just more misinformation based on fundamental misunderstandings. The pixel dimensions and visual fidelity of maps is directly correlated to render size and object distance from the camera. For example, in a 4K 16:9 render where the characters are seen in a medium or wide shot the use of 4K maps is absolutely not necessary."THANK you.
"But again, Daz3D is marketing primarily to amateurs/hobbyists who are not thinking about how to properly optimize a scene to get the best visual quality with the best render times." ... "In Daz Studio it’s just “click to add stuff then click render” and when it doesn’t work people lose their minds and blame everyone but themselves."
Precisely. It's a tool. It does (mostly) what you tell it to. Screaming about a differently desired result is illogical and borderline insane. Expecting more with less is silly and self-defeating.
"As for Daz Studio 5… I still don’t see it coming. If it does I think it’s at least a year away and that’s a best case scenario."
I'd second that sentiment/prediction, and I hope it comes true no sooner. There's simply too long a list of necessary corrections and inclusions (and that's if they truly are listening/paying attention, which I do think they are) to "expect" anything less in a 5 release. I would wish they wouldn't. They could shove out another garbage edition, replete with new Iray engine that rivaled Arnold, and if it still had the issues of the latest 4.xx embarrassments I still wouldn't touch it. (Admitedly, I'd install and render with it. But I'd still work in and save out from 4.15.)
Get the bugs out of 4, by actually getting the bugs out of 4, and make 5 something to actually be proud of. I'd wait frickin two more years for something like that.On "DAZ Presentation and Communication"... in a separate post for clarity*
September 25, 2022 at 4:39 am #1870882On DAZ Presentation and Communication: And as in *"clarity", the kind DAZ lacks
"That’s fine, not everyone has to be an expert, but if Daz3D is going to market things on a technical level then they need to present information more clearly at a beginner/amateur level. Otherwise you get a lot of people wondering why clothes or textures for one 3D person don’t fit a different 3D person."
"Daz3D’s biggest problems (aside from Daz Studio 4 being a massive dumpster fire) are that they just don’t know how to position themselves, or how to present and market their content properly. It’s very clear that they just don’t know their audience at all. As such they create so much doubt, confusion, and anger whenever they introduce new content/upgrades."
"That and other points weren’t explained clearly by Jay hence the fuss that ensued.
I really question the idea and usefulness behind the constant teasers that Daz put out about upcoming products. As in this case it has led to a lot of confusion, speculation and negativity before they finally drop. IMO it would have been better to just have launched G9 and DS5 together along with documentation and/or a user guide."DAZ has serious problems in general. They often seem (seem) to root from a similar source: Laziness and poke-at-it-trial-&-error development. They certainly don't need to amplify with poor communication, but they do. Because... maybe it's their MO. I flatly agree with all the sentiments made in here.
Why this continues is baffling, mostly. The one thing they could control, on the daily, and EASILY so, and they don't.
Ridiculous - literally.
Maybe it's a result of dumping tons(?) of resources into a slapdash project, to get to something that filled a niche and continues to. ("Caring" or "trying" "too much" might never have been the impetus, is what I'm suggesting.) And so you get a result like DAZ. Which works, within the environment and for the intended audience, and so why "fix" it.I truly believe that they dug the hole they're in unintentionally - mostly. The code/improvement hole, as it stands, with all its Microshaft-ish roots, is not easily corrected. (An understatement.) It's very easy, and common, to lay more crap on your crap; and then you want to "implement that one thing this time"; and you procrastinate; and then it's Friday all of a sudden. And it only gets harder to turn the ship around the bigger it gets. So I get it. I also believe it would take a monumental feat to start from a new base and get the same functionality - however improved. A feat that could likely not even be begun without a serious commitment to investment - probably to the point of the need for a new revenue model. (Right, no more "free" core platform.) So I get the reasons nothing like that has happened, and probably will not soon, if ever. Even the creation of a MANUAL for what the "project" is now would take some serious involvement, due to said. All this/that is a whole nother discussion.
But what they don't do - the very basic, very easy, accurate and well-though-out public outreach and promotion, on a CONSISTENT basis - is nothing less than self-harm.
There is no reason I can see for this. And so it remains an oddity.
As if they wish to fail. (Taxes? Other?)(I know I know, prob just simple lack of interest/commitment.)(Then again, I suppose another def of self-harm could be end-user expectations of "consistency" from DAZ Studio.)
September 25, 2022 at 4:47 am #1870884preorder preorder preorder. yeah no. Not until they fix daz being so slow when you add 4-5 extra morphs. Until then i ll sail the arrrrr seas
September 25, 2022 at 8:42 am #1870904For all the above, Yup that's Daz for ya! Cant wait to play with Gen9 🤔
September 25, 2022 at 11:18 am #1870934Well if we are going to have this as the negative thread, I really do not like the unified mesh idea.
With the first Genesis, largely we had either effete males or butch females.I am trying to keep an open mind, but the relative lack of poly density in the breast area does not bode well IMO.
Maybe they will review this situation at G9.1

September 25, 2022 at 12:55 pm #1870966This is true.
Every customer & application has its own standard.
Standard is really meaningless other than to define the supposed requirements of the person writing it.

September 25, 2022 at 4:19 pm #1871023I wonder if someone already has access to Genesis 9 base to be able to share it with us already, might be that someone already has it since some pa's has them and maybe we have someone with access to it already in here
September 25, 2022 at 7:44 pm #1871050Just in case anyone hasn't seen this: Jay Versluis managed to convert a G3 character to G9.
September 25, 2022 at 8:04 pm #1871052So did you sit & watch for 2.5 hours?
Some chapter markings would have saved folk time & patience.

September 25, 2022 at 8:49 pm #1871055i was even with him in the stream and gave him some tips about wrap and asked him about some stuff aswell as described him some stuff about to correct morphs rig and such
September 26, 2022 at 12:10 am #1871097@eelgoo Shush, dude. They are bookmarked. 🤪
Anyway, my take on Gen9 is.. I'm getting to old and care less about spending money on figures that I always have to edit to my liking anyway.
..So I'm handing off the torch to the next gen. Good luck on your patreon porno games and hope they 'squish' to ur liking.... SOME DAY.
- Peace, SUPERTRAMP!
