So, what was the entire fucking point of 8.1 then? I thought "oh great, look, they're extending the G8 series for another life cycle, great!"
Genesis 8.1 is going to end up being the shortest lived Daz generation isn't it? All of a year. Even G1 and G2 didn't last that short.
September 22, 2022 at 8:52 pm #1869986Absolutely.
Quite surprised that they took that retrograde step & I reckon the lack of poly density around the breast area might cause issues too.

September 22, 2022 at 10:07 pm #1870036OK I'm a bit confused. I can load an OBJ into about any 3d program as well as textures, right? I can apply Daz textures to an OBJ made in Blender. The only thing that would change is that the software would look at how to render it and rigging? I don't do animation, but some seems to work or be compatible across some platforms right? Wouldn't the only thing Daz needs to be updated is how the character interacts with other objects and light? If a Console can work out backwards compatibility, why couldn't Daz? Not sure why a rewritten Daz couldn't use V4-G9 if I can load content from 30 years ago into programs today. Anyone care to enlighten me?
September 22, 2022 at 10:34 pm #1870043@scoobydude51 There is no 'built in' HD. The base mesh of G9 is just higher density - similar to a G8 at subd level 1. That means non-PA morphs can still only sculpt at the base mesh resolution - but as the mesh is denser, a bit more detail can be sculpted in without the need for the HD toolkit. This should be a good thing (which could be made better by releasing the damn HD toolkit! 😀 )
@slender331man The skeleton looks roughly the same - only the names of the joints have been changed to, I paraphrase from the Youtube stream, "industry standard naming conventions". A converter would just need to map old joint names to new joint names as a basis. Obviously there's other aspects to the conversion process but the joint names won't matter.September 23, 2022 at 3:29 am #1870099Awesome! I’m glad that DAZ found a good compromise for the HD situation.
Now we just need the Dforce Strand hair editor to be available for everyone.
September 23, 2022 at 7:36 am #1870162@Duval99 well yes, it'll still be vendor's job to create a better conversion kit and sell it at 20$+ instead of daz having a proper conversion as usual then. because I don't believe base G9 has any compatibility with G8/8.1 outfits, hairs and stuffs, since all weights, rigging and UVs are completely different.
September 23, 2022 at 10:08 am #1870247@slender331man so, in your opinion, what will happen with shoes? since i invest a lot into shoes assetts I am quite worried that my library of high heels and trainers won't work at all with G9.
Or is there a chance that with auto adapt they'll look ok? This doesn't happen very much when fitting previous generations of shoes to the G8 models (except some cases) while for outfits I manage sometimes to even autofit V4 clothes to G8... What's your opinion?
Hair I am less worried about as I see they interchange quite well within generations but shoes it's a bit of a preoccupation.
September 23, 2022 at 11:10 am #1870264@Zx96 it was just a rant for me on how shall they supply a good built-in conversion instead of having other vendor's conversion tools. but imo they should have an improved built-in solution to better fit in stuffs like shoes, pumps and heels as you mentioned. so that we won't end up relying on extra stuffs like RSSY clothing converter and pose converter or any extra vendor stuffs. by default, the built-in converter needs to cover all those. so that we can work on them "day one" (not exactly day one but you get the gist, work with it early) and not have to wait 3 months for someone to churn out a "better" conversion tool, each at 20$.
September 23, 2022 at 2:11 pm #1870315@slender331man Currently it looks like that autofit isn't working, but I doubt it will stay that way. The company behind Daz is pretty greedy and they will want there stuff backwards compatible so as to be able to keep selling those older products.
It won't be perfect as autofit never has been perfect when going from one gen to another, but they'll probably fix it so that it isn't as bad as it is right now.September 23, 2022 at 5:01 pm #1870380September 23, 2022 at 5:25 pm #1870383It wasn't just the nipples / areolae that I was referring to.
We will see in due course anyway.
🙂September 23, 2022 at 7:02 pm #1870416Outfits should work with G9! Versluis in the stream reveal even gave away an outfit (Caryl Outfit) he made with Fugazi compatible with both G8, G8.1 and G9.
As for heels (G3 to G8 works, after all) and hair (hopefully with no loss of bones), they should be compatible too.
The only things that won't be compatible will be morphs, expressions (?) skins, and UV connected stuff (unless a UV conversion is possible/released), and anything that uses the new UVs & Material Zones (Geoshells, come to mind) unless there is going to be an update from vendors for these.
What's next? Poses and Smart props....maybe? But, given that a conversion has been made from G1, G2, G3, and G8 already, I don't really see why not. Not perfect, but possible.

"....on a technical level then they need to present information more clearly.."
Yes, after the presentation there were a lot of people with their knickers in a bunch about the new 8K textures, "OMG I'll need to buy a 4090 for DS!", which weren't textures at all but normal maps. That and other points weren't explained clearly by Jay hence the fuss that ensued.
I really question the idea and usefulness behind the constant teasers that Daz put out about upcoming products. As in this case it has led to a lot of confusion, speculation and negativity before they finally drop. IMO it would have been better to just have launched G9 and DS5 together along with documentation and/or a user guide.September 24, 2022 at 6:32 am #1870600I’m basically done with Daz, so I really don’t have a dog in this fight anymore
I'm curious, @Littlepleasures, what did you move on to? Maya? Blender? Sims 4?
September 24, 2022 at 6:47 am #1870602My take on Daz is it's a Digital dress up game that people use to create art. Some people use it as a base and paint over it, others just render and call it good. Some animate but I think it's probably not the best at that. No idea since I don't animate. It seems to have a loyal pron following. My opinion is its mostly for casual users and digital artists. I think it fills that role pretty well. Heck, poser is still out and I thought that would have died by now. The nice thing is it has a huge supply of created content. It's really not for content creators IMHO its for content users. If you're skilled enough to design a person from a digital mudball I've no idea what you would be using Daz for. One issue I see is the quality of what current tech is capable of. You can basically scan a person and create near real quality and only people with a skilled eye for such things could pick out a fake. With the other character software out you can create characters on the fly. That I think is something Daz can do if you have enough morphs loaded but its just not as fluid. I will admit Id rather see more effort going into the program than into a model.
