Daz3D is using the Gillette consumer economic model, printer manufacturers use this model as well. You give away your razor, printer, software and then make your money selling razor blades, printer ink and 3D content. Gillette was credited with having made itself rich during and after WWII by practically giving away it's razors to the military and making it up on selling the blades. The solders got use to the disposable blades and since the razors were so cheap or even free with blades bought them.
Watch or read Consumer Reports for printers as the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) makes a huge difference, instead of the price of the printer as ink prices and choices vary.
