Have belonged to Daz for over 17 years.
With what I have purchased (and stolen) if I dollar average...I come out
ahead.
If they will let me pay a year up front I will subscribe (will contact them)
Now
Mentioned this in another thread.
When you use Daz Install Manager (I don't, except for the following)
it actually installs the files to a default section of your computer.
So if you were to update or install a new version, the actual file is
there. Merely copying and pasting these files will provide a backup.
In Windows 10 the location if these files is:
C>Users>Public>Public Documents>Daz 3D>InstallManager>Downloads.
As a side note goz plugins are also there.
You only have to do it once.......insurance.
By the way these files take up space, it is not a bad idea
to copy then somewhere elseOctober 7, 2024 at 1:39 pm #2094495Sub? I dumped Adobe products when they went to a sub, so I'm for damn sure not going to pay for a DAZ sub. I have decades (literally, decades!) worth of content to fall back on, a huge stockpile of ancient Poser stuff I can up-convert, and (admittedly random) backup versions of DAZ Studio going back for years now (and as long as Windows keeps a compatibility mode going in the future that can reach down to W11, they will work for years to come.)
By the way, if you want to stock up on some previous DS versions yourself, here's a good place to pull down a few past versions to your HDD: https://f95zone.to/threads/daz-studio-repository.215178/
Sucks about the converter being locked behind a sub - it's also the first time that I've seen that tactic. Did anyone grab the plugin before it got locked up?
From @scoobydude51 : "Unreal Engine is getting a built in character creator tool"
...ooo! tell me more! (I'll go look, too.) Might be a great place to migrate to if it's extensible enough.
October 7, 2024 at 1:51 pm #2094499Re: Unreal char creator.
It's the old Metahuman project brought in and (from the looks of it) amped-up. Not sure I want to go through the whole animation rigamarole just to grab still images, though. Will you really have to do that? Also... online-only? Argh! Why can I not just keep stuff on my computer, so I can just go offline with it whenever I go on a trip (which I tend to do a lot of)?
One other complaint: I go to the site, make an Epic account, requested early access, went through 5 minutes(!) of account creation and 2FA verifications, only to get "Something Went Wrong". I understand it's a beta, but if these guys are going to topple DAZ, I don't see it happening anytime soon. 🙁

October 7, 2024 at 2:00 pm #2094502i just love how not a single person on the DAZ forums is liking this and are calling DAZ out for Unity/Adobe levels of greed
October 7, 2024 at 2:45 pm #2094505Their Moderators will have their hands full then. 🙂
October 7, 2024 at 3:29 pm #2094507Photoshop made the same corporate decision years back, by doing online memberships, well,
we still can find the latest versions somewhere else. You think a bad program like DAZ can survive by doing the same..?
No way they survive the next 10 years, other then going in a whole new direction not comparable
to what we`ve been used to from DAZ.We will find the new versions after a while online, if not they go even faster down then they will think. They whole user base are people like us. and all the Ren,py dev`s, comic creators, etc. Those people are not going to pay a monthly description.
October 7, 2024 at 4:14 pm #2094520There is a special effects company , who when hiring, will ask
the new potential employee if he has Adobe Photoshop.
If he says yes and that he bought it they will not hire him.
The idea being anyone stupid enough to buy Photoshop is not wanted.
( I might add that this company is not a "Mom&Pop" operation)
The future of Daz is written hereOctober 7, 2024 at 4:27 pm #2094524Looks like Jim Thornton and the crew are banking on their own AI model, trained on 20 years of characters (that PAs created).
Now, if they allowed lora training based on their model (obviously, online) they could be just like civitai...sort of.
Jim and the bunch spun off Tafi in 2019 to focus on gaming oriented stuff, and if they jump on the AI bandwagon, GPU/server time is gonna cost, so subscription and/or time based charges are to be expected (just like everybody else).
Oh, and any new character generation will get plowed right back into the base model or lora or extension, at some point.
I'm not entirely sure that this will throw DazStudio a lifeline. There's a lot of 'free' competition out there and more coming by the week.
October 7, 2024 at 5:09 pm #2094530Huh, I was wrong then…
EDIT: of course they would fumble the 4.23 release too! No one sees any update and is just the same video minus the Premier exclusive plugins and features!
October 7, 2024 at 8:21 pm #2094540This wouldn't have happened if DS5 was anywhere near being released. The DS5 carrot dangled in front of us way back in 2021 no longer looks so fresh.... we were gaslit.
October 7, 2024 at 8:30 pm #2094542Normally I try out the latest public beta.
There is so much padding in there I don't think I'll bother with this.
Has it gone online only yet?

October 7, 2024 at 10:44 pm #2094554Will be interesting to see what this new version is like. In the meantime I am copy current version to a hard drive. I know I am going to have copy a big database when I get my new PC in December.
I know with this new premier - I am going to just leave my account as it is and then cancel it next year. Unless there is a yearly option. And then I might reconsider.
