Tommy Atkins (often just Tommy) is slang for a common soldier in the British Army. It was certainly well established during the nineteenth century, but is particularly associated with World War I. French and Commonwealth troops would also call British soldiers "Tommies". British soldiers furing world war II wore mostly Battle Dress uniform. In 1939, the Battle Dress uniform was adopted as a field uniform; made of wool and patterned after British BD. Officers had the option of having BD tailored from better material, but in the field most wore "off the rack" BD, with a modified open collar. Battle Dress completely replaced service dress as a field uniform beginning in 1940 as enough of the new uniforms became available.
